Background • Duke ellingotn was born in 1829-1899 • Duke was born in washingtondc.usa • At the age of seven Duke Elllignton started taking piano classes his mom surroned him with dignified women to teach him elegance in the summer of 1914 while working as a soda jerk in the poodle café he wrote his first composition soda fountain rag Ellington then began performing sax in washington dc at private embassy partys and private society balls
Background continued early music career • When Ellington's drummer was invited to join the Wilber sweat man orchestra in new york city Ellington made the fateful decision to leave his successful music career in Washington Dc and move to Harlem and ultimately become part of the Harlem renaissance They found an emrging jazz scene that was hard to crack and they played at rent house parties for income discouraged they went back to Washignton DC. Then they got a gig in new jersey in the exsclusive club in harlem and that gig let to fame and got them in to holllywood
