Maxillofacial prosthetics is a branch of dentistry that deals with congenital and acquired defects of the head and neck. Maxillofacial prosthetics integrates parts of multiple disciplines including head and neck oncology, congenital malformation, plastic surgery, speech, and other related disciplines. This article deals with restoration of acquired defects, which may be intraoral or extraoral. Intraoral defects may involve the mandible, tongue, soft palate, or hard palate, while extraoral defects may involve any other area of the head or neck. Thomas N. Johnson, Ocularist, is a native of Florida, born in West Palm Beach. Mr. Johnson specializes in the fabrication and fitting of custom ocular and maxillofacial prosthetics. At the age of twelve he was involved in a tragic BB gun accident which resulted in the loss of his right eye. This experience has allowed Mr. Johnson to relate to the difficult psychological and physical issues involved with losing an eye. Going through this traumatic event himself has resulted in his compassionate persona towards his patients needs.Alec C. Coffee, Ocularist, was born in Ohio and joined the practice in 2013. He specializes in ocular and maxillofacial prosthetics including auricular and nasal. Our ocularists treat patients of all ages and never turn away a patient regardless of his/her insurance status. See *Insurance* page for more information floridaocularprosthetics.com. FIRST VISIT Your initial visit will be a complimentary consultation with Mr. Johnson, to acquire and access the previous history of your eye and the condition of your orbital socket. If this is your first prosthetic eye you will most likely be fitted with a temporary prosthesis to wear until your custom piece is complete. If a new prosthesis is required, the fitting process may begin immediately. Various prosthetic shapes will be inserted and any necessary adjustments will be made to the fit. If you are already wearing an eye, we generally use your current prosthesis for fitting purposes because it is the shape that your socket has conformed to.Then if necessary a modified impression of your orbital socket will be taken to ensure we have a 3D outline to create you custom conformer .
