  2. Loyalists Vs. Patriots Loyalists Patriots Colonists who were still loyal to the king (10-20%) Favored action against the king, or outright independence from Great Britain (50%)

  3. Albany Plan of Union 1754 • An early attempt to form a union of the colonies for defense and business • Seven colonies signed on, but it was never carried out

  4. French and Indian War 1754- 1763 • Costly war for territory between the Great Britain and France • After the war, G.B. wanted the colonies to pay for the costs of the war

  5. Proclamation of 1763 • Forbade English colonists to live west of the Appalachian Mountains • Meant to stabilize the relationship with Native Americans

  6. Quartering Act 1765 • Colonists had to provide basic needs of soldiers • Housing , cooking utensils, firewood and candles

  7. Stamp Act 1765 • Colonists had to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. • Newspapers, legal documents • The money was for defense of the American frontier

  8. Stamp Act Congress 1765 • Nine colonies met to talk about the Stamp Act • Wrote a letter to King George III complaining that only colonies could tax themselves IN the colonies (NOT Great Britain)

  9. Declaratory Act of 1766 • Act passed by Parliament that said it had the right to make laws for the colonies in ALL matter—including taxation.

  10. Sons of Liberty • A secret org. founded to protest the Stamp Act • Took the motto: “No Taxation Without Representation”

  11. Townshend Acts 1767 • Tax collectors had writs of assistance (search warrants) to go through colonial businesses • Meant to catch smugglers • Also placed taxes on necessary goods

  12. Boston Massacre 1770 • Five civilians were killed by British soldiers • Tensions had been growing since 1768 when British troops arrived to enforce the heavy taxes

  13. Tea Act/Boston Tea Party 1773 • Tea not shipped by the British East India Co. was taxed at a higher rate—meaning colonial merchants were taxed ever higher • Colonists dressed as Native Ams. and threw 3 shiploads of tea into the harbor

  14. Coercive Acts (AKA Intolerable Acts) • Restricted civil rights including the right to trial by jury • Intended to punish the colony of Mass. for the Tea Party

  15. Battles of Concord and Lexington 1775 • First military engagements of the Revolutionary War • Fought April 19, in Mass. • “Shot heard ‘round the world”
