Theory in research • Theory is an assumption, a concept, or a philosophy about a certain phenomenon or about the relationship between specific phenomena in a social setting. • It explains what these assumptions are and presents an argument to inform us what the theory entails and how it was formulated.
Theory in research • A set of interrelated constructs, definitions and propositions that presents a systematic view of phenomena by specifying relations among variables with the purpose of explaining and predicting phenomena. • Theory enlightens us about what is known about and written about a particular issue, and thus provides a helpful backdrop to our research.
