  4. Iranian Revolution: Background • Who was SHAH REZA PAHLAVI? • The “king” of Iran for four decades • The U.S. wanted him in power b/c he was sympathetic to the West, not the Soviet Union during the Cold War

  5. What kind of a ruler was he? Ruthless? Reformer? Created modern economy Strong middle class Gave vote and rights to women • Led a one-party state • Use of secret police to control people • Suppressed dissent violently

  6. Why was he disliked? • Seen as a puppet of the United States • Conservative Muslims disliked reforms • Middle class wanted more political freedoms

  7. The Ayatollah khomeini • Spiritual Shiite leader of conservative Muslims • Leader of the Revolution • Promised to make Iran an Islamic THEOCRACY (religious government) independent from Western influences • “Death to America!”

  8. The shah flees • When? Jan. 1979 • Shah flees to the U.S. to seek medical treatment (and to escape revolutionary elements) • …and doesn’t return!

  9. The ayatollah khomeini in charge • Autocratic Islamic regime led by Khomeini and the mullahs • Revolutionary Guards as “spiritual enforcers” • Women lose rights • Torture and imprisonment
