Theme • The theme is the big idea of a personal narrative, novel, essay, etc. which is universal to all cultures and is timeless. • The theme sometimes can be the "moral of the story" or a lesson to be learned. • Themes are classic ideas that usually focus on human nature, the ideals of society or general lessons about life. For example, a few examples of theme are the great journey, growing up, friendship, etc.

  3. Choosing a Theme for your Narrative A personal narrative needs to have a big message, or a theme. The theme expresses what you learned from the experience and why it is important.
