The Portuguese Empire • Afonso de Albuquerque • Portuguese Sailor • Conquered and established the Portuguese colonial empire in the Indian ocean • Wanted to end Muslim rule in Southeast Asia • Malacca • Taken in 1511 • Massacred the city’s Muslims • Turned into the Spice Trading Center • Controlled by Portugal for most of the 1500’s • Portugal lacked resources to really expand on their empire

The Rise of the Dutch • 1599 • The Dutch return home with spices • This led to mass numbers of oversea activities for the Dutch • 1602 • Dutch East India Co. • Created to rival the Portuguese • They had full sovereign powers • Build armies • Wage war • Negotiate treaties • Govern territory • 1641 • The Dutch capture Malacca • Establish a Monopoly on the Spice Islands
