PEE WHAT DOES IT MEAN??? Point Evidence Explanation …and what does that mean???
PEE • Point – A statement that you want to make • Evidence – A quote from the text • Explanation – Explain what the quote means and how it helps to demonstrate your point
Let’s think about it like a hamburger! Point Evidence Explanation If you leave either the top, filling or base out, it is not a proper hamburger! The same is true when you answer a literature question. If you leave either the Point, Evidence or Explanation out, it is not a proper answer!
So what do we use PEE for? • We use PEE to answer comprehension questions about literature (novels) • And later… • You will use it to write literature essays!
Why do we use PEE? • When you are writing about a text or discussing a text it is very important that you use quotes to back up what you are saying. • Using PEE is a way of writing about a text making sure that you include textual evidence. • Using PEE will help you get a better level in reading. • It proves you understand and can write about what you have read. • Let’s try it…
Here is a comprehension question about ‘Skellig’ • When Skellig talks to Michael, what does Michael find unpleasant? • When Skellig talks to Michael, Michael thinks that Skellig smells awful. This is clear when Michael narrates, “I tried not to breathe, not to smell him.” When someone smells bad, one does not want to get too close or to breathe in the smell, so although Michael wants to help Skellig, he does not want to get too close, so that he does not have to breathe in his smell. • With a partner, work out where the Point, Evidence and Explanation are.
Here is the answer broken down into PEE • When Skellig talks to Michael, Michael thinks that Skellig smells awful. This is clear when Michael narrates, “I tried not to breathe, not to smell him.”When someone smells bad, one does not want to get too close or to breathe in the smell, so although Michael wants to help Skellig, he does not want to get too close, so that he does not have to breathe in his smell.
Copy the following down to help you use Point / Evidence / Explanation (PEE) • Point – What is your answer in very simple terms. • Evidence – This is a ‘quote’ taken from the text to prove or support what it is that you are saying. • Explanation – This is where you give a more detailed explanation of the point and quote. It is good to include your own personal opinion here.
Let’s try some more… • Explain Skellig’s eating habits. • Now write a PEE answer using a quote from the text.
A possible answer… • It is clear that Skellig does not have good table manners and is a very messy eater. When Skellig eats the Chinese food,‘The red sauce trickled down from is lips, down over his chin on to his black jacket.’ This shows that he eats in a disgusting way and gets food all over himself. It could be because he is in a rush to get food as he hasn’t eaten for a long time, or perhaps he is not used to other people watching him eat.
