Depressants By the Illustrious Melanie Raphael
Breathalyzers • Used to detect alcohol in the breath • Uses potassium dichromate (VI) • Orange to green color change- the greener it is, the more alcohol was consumed • Redox reaction • dichromate (VI) to Cr 3+ ion (reduced) • Ethanol oxidized to form ethanal, then ethanoic acid • Other alcohol detectors (more accurate) • Intoxilyzers • chromatography
Intoxilyzers • Uses infrared (IR) spectography • Sample of breath passed into spectrometer • Ethanol in breath absorbs due to OH group • Machine compares breath and air sample with no breath
Why to not mix alcohol and other drugs • Synergistic effect • Alcohol depresses CNS • Enhances the effect of other drugs w/ sedative effects on CNS • Increased risk stomach bleeding with Aspirin • Reduce the effect of some drugs • Overdose or not get desired effect
Examples of Depressants • Diazepam- Valium • Nitrazepam- Mogadon • Fluoxetine Hydrochloride- Prozac
Diazepam and Nitrazepam • Both contain • Amide/ketone/carbonyl • Tertiary amine • Effects of different doses • Moderate • disinhibition • Sedation • reduce anxiety/tension • slower mental processing • Drowsiness • High • Sleep • Coma • Death
Bilen Hope you enjoyed the best presentation of them all. Have a nice day …or don’t I couldn’t care less
