J + E Farms • J + E Farms was a farrowing unit with approximately 2700 sows. • Now it is a farrow to finish company. • It is jointly owned by Jim Den Hartog and his wife. • It is located in Northwest Iowa just outside of Sheldon, IA
History & Competitors • The company was started in 1998 with Jim Den Hartog as the owner but not the manager. • Currently, however, since 2003, Jim Den Hartog has been both the manager and the owner of J+E Farms. • J+E competes against itself to get the best possible prices.
How Did I Get This Internship? • I worked with a local veterinarian for 3 years during high school. • The veterinarian recommended me to Jim Den Hartog • Corresponded through phone calls and meetings until the start of summer • Wants to start having regular interns
Fellow Employees • 9 employees split into Breeding group and Farrowing group • Jeff Tau is current manager of the Farrowing side of the business • Randy Ebnes is the current manager of the Breeding side of the business • I spent most of my time working in farrowing because there was more to learn there.
Hours worked • I worked from 6 a.m. – 2pm • Night shifts: 7 or 8pm – 9 or 10pm • Weekend work: 6am – 12pm or whenever done

Expectations • I didn’t know what to expect… • I didn’t know anything about swine so this was a major learning experience for me • I learned everything about pigs from why and when we induce to how to handle sows to how to tell when a sow is in heat.
