ROMS vs HF Radar vs Driftersin Lagrangian Frame? • Meeting with Charles • 10/21/08
What Carter & Satoshi think • Dong et al (in review) • ROMS against observations including HF radar vs drifters • In Eulerian Frame • Agree within 10’s % of difference • Can nearshore site connectivity be accurately predicted? • Lagrangian validations may be useful • (to convince people who do not believe in models)
How to measure “accuracy” • In terms of mean or realizations? • Mean is more predictable • “True dispersal” = larval dispersal, pollutant spread, etc • Nearshore site connectivity • We need some metrics that work for all methods • Statistical measures? • e.g., residence time, PDFs, connectivity? • Gaps in coverage among them
HF Radar Coverage • Ohlmann et al (2006) show its accuracy against drifters • Issues: limited coverage & “gaps” Year = 2007 Year = 2001
Surface Drifter Coverage • Probably most accurately describe water parcel dispersals • Issues: spatio-temporal resolutions, not after 1999 Not many in the South of SCB
ROMS Coverage • Best spatial & temporal resolution (1996 - 2003) • 2004 - 2008 depends on support for Charles (1995, 1994, …?) [ C ]
Given gaps among observations & ROMS, • What do we do? • We don’t know yet • Let’s start with what we can do...
Q: What (how) should we do? • Q: How do we collaborate? • Up to Carter, Libe, Charles & Jim HF radar & drifters Carter& Libe ROMS Charles, Eileen & Jim Applications Dave & Satoshi Need more arrows here
That’s it • Thanks...
