  1. GREEN BUILDINGS AND LEED CERTIFICATION Presented By: Mr. Anbalagan Kandasamy Mechanical Engineer LEED AP, ASHRAE Member

  2. What is a Green Building?

  3. “A green building is one that • Conserves natural resources • Uses less water • Optimises energy efficiency • Generates less waste • Provides healthier spaces for occupants • As compared to a conventional building."

  4. Were There No Green Buildings In the Past? Why Now?

  5. Our elder generations have been living comfortably in villages and Towns • Respecting the environment they lived • Constructing to suit the local requirements • Adapting simple methods to conserve water and the available resources

  6. Changes in Lifestyle and Construction Methods • Increased Comfort Requirements • Depleting Energy Resources and Increased Utility Rates • Impact on the Environment

  7. What Do We Do Now? How Do We Approach Design?

  8. STAKE HOLDERS

  9. A SMALL CHANGE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

  10. Use of better building materials – insulated walls and ceilings, low heat emitting glazing • Use of Low Flow Water Fixtures and Aerators • Use of CFLs instead of Incandescent Lamps • Recycling of waste water, Rain Water Harvesting • Utilisation of renewable energy – solar water heaters can be a start • Conducting Energy Audits on Existing Buildings

  11. BENEFITS OF GREEN BUILDINGS • TANGIBLE BENEFITS • REDUCED OPERATING COST • ENERGY SAVINGS 40%-50% • WATER SAVINGS 20%-30% • INTANGIBLE BENEFITS • REDUCED IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT • ENHANCE OCCUPANT HEALTH AND COMFORT • IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY OF OCCUPANTS

  12. GLOBAL SCENARIO

  13. INDIAN GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL

  14. LEED AND IGBC ADDRESS COMPLETE LIFECYCLE OF BUILDING

  15. USGBC AND IGBC HAVE FOUR LEVELS OFGREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATION

  16. FEATURES – GREEN BUILDING • MINIMAL DISTURBANCE TO LANDSCAPES AND SITE CONDITION • USE OF RECYCLED AND ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY BUILDING MATERIALS • USE OF NON TOXIC AND RECYCLABLE MATERIALS • USE OF ENERGY EFFICIENT AND ECO FRIENDLY EQUIPMENT • USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY • INDOOR AIR QUALITY FOR HUMAN SAFEY AND COMFORT • EFFECTIVE CONTROLS AND BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

  17. IGBC SUSTAINABLE SITES

  18. IGBC WATER EFFICIENCY

  19. IGBC ENERGY & ATMOSPHERE

  20. IGBC MATERIALS & RESOURCES

  21. IGBC INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

  22. IGBC INNOVATION IN DESIGN

  23. IGBC REGIONAL PRIORITY

  24. RECOMMENDATION • Implementation • First and foremost Implementation of ECBC. Either the central or state governments should decide to adopt it as a mandatory standard similar to other mandatory Building Codes. • Seriousness and leadership – • Conviction and Commitment to implementation at all levels • Mobility Needed from the Administrators • Awareness for global Marketing needs • Increased competition at home and abroad, has compelled the business leaders to look into alternative options to save energy cost.

  25. Summary • Take what we learn here to our community • Even the smallest effort will make a difference *******

  26. PROLEED’s VISION FOR A GREENER COMMUNITY

  27. THANK YOU!!
