  3. What is the purpose of the painting?

  4. What is the purpose of the painting? It reminds us that what and how we are taught affects our actions and moral judgments. It also shows that as the teacher has a responsibility in teaching, each student has a responsibility in learning. For example, It contrasts how the boy with the gun copes with life, verses the boy who uses the Bible for help and guidance.

  6. Who is the audience? • The audience is directed towards the educators of children, because he gives examples of students being taught and also how they act and change.

  8. How does the shading and color effect the painting? The artist uses shading to contrast and guide us to conclusions, however, our differences in learning and background can lead us to different conclusions. For example: the flag, the doors, the ghostly image, the globe, etc.

  10. How does he represent ethical appeal? • Dawson tether's the American Flag and the Bible into his painting, which shows his love for his country and what it was founded upon. Also he uses facts from history to covey his point.

  12. What is the logical appeal? Dawson incorporates history in to this painting to show that what we are taught impacts how we behave. For example, the picture of George Washington has Hitler's face on it. As you know both were powerful leaders but Hitler was taught to hate certain individuals, where Washington was taught to protect individuals.

  14. What is the emotional appeal? The painting opens up your eyes to lead you into awareness and responsibility that everyone has an influence on society. It shows the anger and happiness in each student and it causes you to have a sense of concern on how the student or students are going to turn out in the future.

When you look at the painting it looks balanced, however, when you analyze the painting you will see that half of the teacher’s face is happy and the other half is angry. Also you will notice that the students on the left seem to be more interested in learning than the ones on the right.

  18. What’s the main focal point? The teacher is the main focal point because she represents authority and she’s the largest object in the room. She also holds the Bell and the Key.
