CASM – What We Do • CASM as a catalyst for development through social, economic and environmental changes in ASM communities around the world through advocacy, networking, knowledge sharing and grass-roots projects • CASM main activities: • Global (CASM Secretariat at WB) • Awareness raising and advocacy • Partnerships • Fund raising • Overall coordination: knowledge and information development and sharing • CASM Regional Networks • Africa, Asia, Asia-Pacific and China • Government level: policies, regulations, technical assistance etc.. • Community levels: support to grass root development initiatives

CASM – Evolution Challenges • CASM recognized as the leading initiative for ASM (G8) • Increased expectations and need to deliver! • 2005/2008 CASM Strategy: • Link to the MDG • Clearer concept of ASM as a platform to local and regional socio-economic development • Clearer focus on: • A) Global/advocacy level • B) Regional/on the ground development activities • Prioritization of activities: • Fair trade • Gender • Great Lakes region • Large scale vs artisanal mining • Set up of a MDTF (2006) • Increased HR for CASM Secretariat • Need to: • Increase synergies with SMAG, partners and networks • Step up advocacy and fund raising • Long term role, sustainability and management?
