Biography • Born to farmers in Colle di Vespignano near Florence • Legend says he was discovered by Cimabue for an apprenticeship while he was drawing an image of his sheep on a stone • Friendship with King Robert of Naples allowed his art to have a greater freedom of speech element to it • Very prosperous life said to have married young and to have had six children

The Frescoes of Assisi • Fresco- the art of painting on fresh, moist plaster with pigments dissolved in water, durable results • One of his earliest art works • Located in the Chapel of St. Nicholas in the Basilica of St. Francis • Images include: Mary and baby Jesus, St. John the Baptist, and St. Francis • Restoration after a damaging earthquake in 1997, found the initials “GB” on the frescoes, proving that Giotto di Bondone did create this work

The Crucifix in Santa Maria Novella • Magnificent crucifix hanging high over the center of the nave • ~ between 1288 and 1289 • Shows break from Byzantine styled work • The heaviness of Jesus’ body and sunken head contrasts with those of earlier works such a Cimabue’s crucifixes which show a more sculpted ideal body • Mary and John look down on Jesus from the horizontal ends of the cross
