  1. Czar Nicholas II Talia Biddle

  2. Early life • Born 6 May 1868 • Oldest son of Tsar Alexander III and his wife Maria Feodorovna. • Gained the throne when his father died in 1894, he was only 26.

  3. Ruling Style • Confirmed autocrat (Aprelenko) • According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, autocracy is a government in which one person possesses unlimited power.

  4. Bloody Sunday • After a harsh defeat in the Russo-Japanese war in 1904, Czar Nicholas II tried a new constitution that gave his citizens rights. This failed because he did not want to give up his autocratic rule. • Angry citizens gathered together and marched to St. Petersburg to petition the Czar. • The troops got scared and shot and killed at least 200 people. • This day is known as Bloody Sunday. • Began the 1905 Revolution. (Bowman)

  5. The 1905 Revolution • This was an uprising of the people of Russia calling for a change in their government. • Nicholas II found peace by creating the October Manifesto. • This was a document that granted the rights of participating in the government by voting for a Duma, a legislative body in the ruling assembly of Russia. (Bowman)

  6. The 1917 Revolution • By late 1916 royalists within the Duma warned the Czar that revolution was not avoidable(Duffy) • When the first World War happened, Czar Nicholas II became very patriotic which made the country support him again, forgetting all his past mistakes

  7. Some people even didn’t have boots, which was a huge hazard when the Russian winter came because they would get frostbite and be unable to fight. • There were also problems back at Russia, there were severe food shortages which put pressure on the Czar to do something even though nothing could be done. • Because Russia was so vast there wasn’t a very good railroad system. Even if there was, all the train operators were out fighting.

  8. Food was left next to the tracks rotting. • As food became rare prices rose to 300% • This caused the numbers of discontented citizens to rise, because of this there were strikes and riots going on everywhere. • As the death tolls went up, the Czars support, enthusiasm, and patriotism that he gained was lost. • The army soon lost their support for their leader as well and there was a rebellion in the lines. • He lost control of the soldiers and they went home to join the rioting. • He had no way to stop the revolution from happening. (White)

  9. The Czar Abdicates • Abdication is when a monarch resigns from his or her office. • On march 17th the Czar abdicated for the sake of his family. • July 6th 1918, Nicholas and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks. (Mcinvale)

  10. Why is he important? • Czar Nicholas II is important to the Russian Revolution because throughout his reign, he made many poor decisions which made a bad reputation for his government and provoked fury against him. • This caused many people to riot and revolt against him because they wanted a different and new form of government in which they could have some of their own say.
