  4. Geography • Vast geography of mountains, lakes, and rivers • Danube river • Lake Neusiedl • Geschriebenstein(tallest mountain in Burgenland) 2,900 ft at its peak

  5. Culture • Opera Festival St. Margarethen: An old Roman quarry is the setting for this exciting summer festival. The main opera of 2012 will be Carmen by Georges Bizet. • Has many castles, towers, farmland, forests, and an annual nova rock festival

History • Throughout history Burgenland was controlled by Roman Empire, the Hun Empire, the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths, the Italian Kingdom of Odoacer, the Kingdom of the Lombards, the AvarKhaganate, the Slavic State of Samo, the Frankish Empire, Great Moravia, the Kingdom of Hungary, the Habsburg Monarchy, the Austrian Empire, Austria-Hungary, Austria, and the World War II German Empire.

  7. Economy • The Burgenland economy relies mostly on the farmland and agriculture • Gross rate lags behind most of the other provinces

  8. Special Foods • A Grammelpogatscherl is a traditionally fat, salty cookie • Knoblauchwurst, translated to garlic-sausage

  9. Franz von Suppé • Works include Boccacio and Donna Juanita. They were both comic operas • Wrote songs, operas, symphonies, concert overtures and more • Born in Dalmatia in the Austrian Empire
