SAY GOODBYE Effective Essay Conclusions
Have a concluding paragraph. Get in; Get out; Get done
3. Open the paragraph with direct reference to the text, flowing naturally from the end of your final body paragraph, and then expand to your more general thesis idea or topic.
4. ECHO your thesis from the introduction, rather than repeat it word for word. Make sure, however, that it is essentially the same idea that you began with and that you connect it directly to the writer.
5. Finish where you started. Make your conclusion stylistically effective, since it is the last impression a reader will have of your essay. The conclusion can remind the reader that your essay has come full circle. Again ECHO rather than repeat exactly.
2. Add new material to your essay at this point. If you have more insights to add, find a way to fit them into your body somewhere.
3. Be long winded. Sum up the main idea of the essay clearly and effectively, once, and than say goodbye.
4. PREACH. Don’t turn your thesis into a “moral of the story”. Avoid “could have”, “would have” or “should have” statements, and don’t give advice about how we can or should live our lives to avoid the problems of the characters in the text. Stick to describing what the writer communicates to us, good or bad.
