Climate change-Leading by EVIDENCE: • Sea level rise- 17 centimeters in the last century • Rising global temperature – since 1980 • Warming oceans – top 700 meters or 2,300 ft of ocean showing warming of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969. • Shrinking ice sheets • Glacier retreats- cycles of glacial advance & retreat • Declining Artic Sea ice – VIDEO

  7. Key Words • Paleoclimatology- study of past climates • Proxy- imprints created during past climates; used as data to interpret past climate What are some proxies you can think of?

  9. shelled microorganisms found in aquatic and marine environments • shells are made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) • record evidence for past environmental conditions in their shells • coiling patterns reveal past temperatures (right coil vs. left coil)

  12. Class Discussion Time! • What may have caused this trend in temperature? What was the overall trend in our sample? • How do studying such species give evidence of past climate trends- use of proxy data as useful and valid evidence? • What other types of species or indicators exist for measuring paleoclimate?
