  6. THE STAGE 1st Born Generation in the US 16-17 years old Vietnamese American or American Vietnamese

  7. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Family Unit: Extended Family Try to communicate with the adults who do not have a good grasp of the English language and are culturally handicapped.

  8. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Intergeneration Living: HiệpSĩ teens are more adaptable compared to their friends at school. When they are in the presence of adults they tend to be quiet and reserved due to the acquired skills early on (Respect the elders)

  9. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT SELF: Independent - Individualism The desire to be autonomous is greatest at the age of 16-17.

  10. SOCIAL RESCUE: Symptom: To break away from parents or people of authority challenge the power of people in charge.

  11. What can YOU do to help your Hiệp Sĩ Teens? Help them to appreciate their unique heritage: Vietnamese American. Allow perceived freedom for HiệpSĩ in selecting activities.

  12. What can YOU do to help your Hiệp Sĩ Teens? Provide opportunity for leadership and independence with guidance: For example: HiệpSĩcóthểđếnvới 3 ngànhvàlàmvaitròĐộiTrưởngtrongnhữngsinhhoạtPhươngPhápHàngĐộihoặcvaitròPhụTácho Huynh Trưởng. HiệpSĩcóthểgiúpđứngdạynhữngbàikhóachuyênmôn, ca hát, phongtràovàchotròchơi. HiệpSĩcóthể serve as a Big Brother/ Big Sister caring for the younger kids. Teach HiệpSĩ on different aspects of leadership, team work, self discipline, and self-control.

PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT Individual identity: “Who am I?” “Why do I look Vietnamese but feel more like an American?” “I look like my parents, but I am nothing like them?” “Why does my family expect me to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or pharmacist?” “Why does the teaching of my religion at home and church go in one direction and the teaching of science in school in another direction on the same topic?”

  14. PSYCHOLOGICAL RESCUE: Symptom: Attempt to find their own identity because they feel their parents don’t understand them, other groups (Cliques) exclude them and sometimes confuse their feelings.

  15. What can YOU do to help your Hiệp Sĩ Teens? Allow interactive and analytical discussions and activities where HiệpSĩ can exchange and debate about societal issues (vấnnạngxãhội, khónghèo, etc…). Assist HiệpSĩ in learning and accustoming to the Vietnamese culture. Assist HiệpSĩ in understanding their calling to be a HiệpSĩ (ơngọi) and the life of HiệpSĩ. Teach ThánhKinhvàápdụngvàođời. Assist HiệpSĩ to explore their role with God, within society, and within their đoàn.

  16. SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT Years of development and synthesize their spiritual growth. Acquiring about their own faith Crystallize their faith journey Learning how to respond to God’s invitation to be salt of earth and light of the world.

  17. SPIRITUAL RESCUE: Acquire their own faith God: Learn to relate to God on the level of friendship. Church: Question about equality, stand in term of morality and social justice. Neighbors: How to apply the commandment of loving neighbor as one’s self. Self: learn to accept their own faith journey.

  18. SPIRITUAL RESCUE: Crystallize their faith journey Helping them to know more about Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, especially TámMốiPhúcThật (The Beatitudes). Start a trend that they can buy into. For example: a Bible gang sign-of-the-cross group a praying team going to church every day crew

  19. SPIRITUAL RESCUE: Learning how to respond to God’s invitation Huynh Trưởngs need to help HiệpSĩ understand their role as a person of faith wherever they find themselves. Service project Group Mission Serving the Parish
