  2. Our National Government -stationed in Washington D.C. -based on the United States Constitution -www.whitehousekids.gov

  3. Executive Branch • Enforces and carries out laws • President- -George W. Bush Jr. -Vice President-Dick Chaney -elected every 4 years -can be reelected for another 4yr term -makes sure that laws passed by Congress are carried out -chooses people to head national departments (cabinet -Secretary of Defense) www.scholastic.com/kids/president

  4. What is required in order to run for President of the United States? • Must be born in the United States • Must be at least 35 years old • Must have lived in the United States for the last 14 years

Legislative Branch • Makes the laws • Decides how much money to spend • Made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives • Together they are called United States Congress. • Every state elects two senators- 6 year terms. • Ohio senators are Democrat, Sherrod Brown and Republican, George Voinovich.

The number of people each state sends to the House of Representatives is based on population. • Ohio has 18 representatives. • Democrat Zack Space is our district representative. • Representatives serve two year terms. • 100 senators in U.S. Senate. • 435 Representatives make up the U.S. House of Representatives.

JUDICIAL BRANCH • Interprets or makes sure that laws follow the Constitution • Headed by the United States Supreme Court • 9 judges make up the U.S. Supreme Court • The president chooses the judges, and are then approved by the Senate. • Judges serve for life. • Judges hear cases that come from the lower courts. • http://www.supremecourtus.gov/about/biographiescurrent.pdf

Executive Branch • Carries out the laws of the state • Headed by Governor • Ohio Governor Ted Strickland (Democrat) • Elected every four years and can be reelected for one more term • Has many departments, heads up State Highway Patrol and nature preserves • Power to veto, or say “no” to a bill

STATE LEGISLATURE • Makes the laws • Made up of 33 senators and 99 representatives • Together the Senate and the House of Representatives make up the General Assembly. • Ohio senators serve four year terms. • Ohio representatives serve two year terms. • Write bills • Ohio senators are Republican Joy Padgett and James Dodd • Our Ohio Representative is Republican James Aslanides.

  11. STATE JUDICIAL BRANCH • Deal with the laws of our state. • Interpret state laws. • Ohio Supreme Court-seven judges • Can reject laws that go against the Ohio Constitution. • Elected for 6 year terms.

  12. Local Government • Has three branches. • Town, city or municipal government • Build and care for sidewalks and street lights. • Run libraries, parks, and local police departments. • Repair streets • Provide fire departments.

  13. LOCAL EXECUTIVE BRANCH • Enforces the laws of the city or town. • Headed by Mayor • Mayor Butch Zwelling • Elected by the citizens of the city or town. • Some cities also have a city manager, which is chosen by city council • Elected for 4 year term.

  14. Local Legislative Branch • City or Town Council- elected by the people in the city or town • Number of members vary • Write laws for the city or town.

  15. Local Judicial Branch • Local Courts and judges • Muskingum County Court House • Interprets the laws of the city or town. • Elected for 6 year terms.

  16. County Government • 88 Counties in Ohio • Muskingum or Licking County • Collect taxes • Provide services such as snow removal and road repairs. • Sheriff- executive of the county, make sure the people obey the laws in the county.

  17. TOWNSHIPS • Counties are divided into townships. • Keep grasses cut along the roads of their areas. • Put up stop signs where they are needed. • Done by municipal government workers. • Township trustees- elected

  18. SCHOOL DISTRICTS • Ran by elected officials called a board of education. • These officials decide how to spend the district’s money, hire employees and help run the school district.
