  3. What is a thesis statement? • Tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of your topic • Is the road map for your paper • Tells the reader what to expect • Makes a claim others might dispute • Is usually a single sentence in your introduction

  4. Thesis Statement Rules: • Directly answers your essential question • Expresses one main idea 3. Outlines what you will say in your paper

  5. Questions To Ask Yourself: • Do I answer my essential question? • Is my thesis statement specific enough? • Is my thesis the road map of my paper? • Does my thesis pass the “so what?” test?

  6. Thesis Example Essential Question: Why did the South and North fight the Civil War? The North and South fought the Civil War for many reasons, some of which were the same and some different.

  7. Thesis Example Essential Question: What is the theme of Mark Twain’s novel, Huckleberry Fin? In Huckleberry Fin, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on river and life on the shore.

  11. Topic sentence. Evidence. Elaboration. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires eating a nutritious diet and getting regular exercise. According to Richard Johnson’s article, “Healthy Living”, a nutritious diet includes eating a variety of foods from each of the four food groups: meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables, and grains. Regular exercise is also an essential part of keeping a healthy lifestyle. Johnson’s article goes on to say that most experts recommend exercising at least thirty minutes a day, six days a week. These two aspects, eating a healthy diet and exercising on a regular basis, will maintain a healthy lifestyle.
