  1. Welcome Parents! Groveland Elementary School 5th Grade Curriculum Night

  2. School Time • School starts promptly at 8:35. So please make sure that your child is getting to school on time. • Being Late and Leaving Early can be an issue/mark your calendar for upcoming tests !!!!!

  3. School-Wide Rules: • Cooperate for a peaceful purpose • Speak with respect • Listen with an Open Mind • Act with Kindness • Care about each other’s feelings • WE are responsible for what we say and do.

  4. Consequences: • Warning • Time out and/or note home • Phone call home • Office Referral • After-School detention • Saturday School (The particular order may vary by teacher)

  5. Rewards: • Praise • Treats • Free Time • Lunch Bunch • Fun Friday • Other (Varies by individual teacher)

  6. Homework: • All homework is due the next school day unless otherwise noted • Late homework or incomplete homework will receive half credit • Homework should be headed with your child’s name, date, homeroom teacher name and the assignment (if on notebook paper) • If your child habitually does not turn in homework, s/he may lose certain privileges • Homework counts as part of grade (20% unless otherwise noted) • Signing the Agenda every night ensures that parents know their child had homework and it is completed

  7. Red/Blue Folders • Contain your child’s graded work for the week and other important papers • Please look over work and any other notes • Return red/blue folder to school the next day • Any graded papers that received a “D” or “F”, please sign and return in the folder

  8. Agendas (Planners) • Your child’s key to keeping organized • Students will copy their homework assignments, upcoming tests, other notices • Please look over daily and sign that you have seen the agenda • Signing the Agenda every night ensures that parents know their child had homework and it is completed

  9. Curriculum • Reading - FCAT-tested • Language Arts (English, Spelling, Writing) • Math - FCAT-tested • Science - FCAT-tested • Social Studies

  10. Weekly reading test FCAT-styled based on the: story, focus skill, robust vocabulary, grammar, and fluency Small group instruction based on needs of students Centers to support literacy and provide independent practice Grades are weighted by assignment: Tests (cold read) 50%, classwork-HW-Centers 20% Quiz 30% Reading

Average percent correct counts as a test grade each grading period Set reading goals with each student AR rewards in classroom and school wide 1st nine weeks – 10pts 2nd nine weeks – 15 pts 3rd nine weeks – 20 pts 4th nine weeks – 25 pts Should spend a minimum of 10-20 minutes each night reading (before bed is a great time) Nightly reading may be content area even though it wouldn’t be AR Accelerated Reader

  12. Reading Skills • Phonics (usually done through spelling) • Vocabulary • Fluency • Comprehension • Focus Skills – conflict/resolutioncharacter’s motivessequencing theme or moral making inferences main idea/detailssummarizing/paraphrasingfact/opinion

Success on“Cold Reads” reading test • True measurement of reading skills being taught and cannot be read aloud to student • Student must show test taking strategies i.e. • underlining/highlighting • boxing/numbering paragraphs 3. preview the questions 4. reading/rereading for understanding 5. checking over their work 6. Using Strategies FRS or MOPP

  14. Language Arts • English/Spelling/Writing • Counts as “1” grade on the Report Card/Progress Report. • HW/classwork – 20% • Quiz/Writing Prompts – 30% • Tests – 50%

  15. Words are introduced on Monday and reviewed throughout the week (practice during centers) Homework Monday thru Thursday Homework counts as 20% of spelling grade Spelling

  16. English • Quizzes each week Unit Tests approximately twice a 9 weeks • Review daily (class work daily)

  17. Writing • Grades taken from writing prompts given approximately 4 times per grading period • Grades given based on Lake County writing rubric and converted into number/letter grades • Every subject area (Science, Reading, Social Studies, Math) will assign a prompt each nine weeks. • Prompts will be done “Florida Writes” style during a 45 minute time period in the classroom.

  18. Math • Tested on FCAT • Tests will be given most weeks • Homework in math, Monday thru Thursday • Weekly FCAT practice • Accelerated Math • Help your child to learn or keep practicing their multiplication tables

  19. Science • Also tested on FCAT • Most chapters will be covered in two or three weeks • Grades come from class work, homework, quizzes, and tests • Weekly experiments, labs, projects, etc…

  20. Social Studies • NOT tested on FCAT (smile) • 13 chapters to cover over the course of the year from Early Explorations to Post Civil War and the Holocaust, including economy, government, civics • Plan on a test every other week • Very little homework, but students should study vocabulary and concepts and have workbook pages complete by end of chapter for a classwork grade.

  23. Field Trips • 1 (MAYBE 2) BIG trips planned • Islands of Adventure / ???? • Students must have the insurance form and the field trip form prior to attending field trip. School insurance may be purchased. • No referrals in the nine weeks that the fieldtrip is in. • You must be an approved parent-volunteer to chaperone • (ask for blue form before you leave)

  24. Dress Code • Shoes worn by students must have their heels covered (prefer sneakers) • Shirts may not be less than sleeveless and cover mid-drift • Shorts/skirts should come to end of fingertips

  25. Safety Patrols • Official patrols have been picked • Students must maintain good grades (B’s or better) • No referrals • Must be responsible for turning in homework and class work on time • Should be at their post on time • Must have their belt everyday

  26. Backpacks and Supplies • In your child’s backpack should always be: binder which houses their agenda, math workbook, loose notebook paper, and pencil pouch • Any books, homework, or workbooks will come home on an as needed basis • Extra notebook paper and pencils may be kept at home until needed or one of their classrooms
