Background HISTORY Cooperative Extension Service • Morrill Act 1862 – Established the land grant university system: University of Florida and Florida A&M University • Hatch Act 1887 – Established Agricultural Research Stations: Mid-Florida Research & Education Center, Apopka • Smith Lever Act 1914 – Established Cooperative Extension Service: Orange County Extension

  21. 4-H Youth Development • The Purpose of 4-H is to teach youth the skills necessary to become productive and successful adults • 4-H is the largest youth organization in the world “Learn by Doing”

  24. 4-H Youth Development Research has shown that 4-H youth are 1.6 times more likely to attend college Recent Money Management Day Camp attendees showed a 25% increase in financial literacy after 15 hours of instruction

  27. Highlights Orange County Extension ’09-’10 Educational & Clientele Contacts 1,391 educational events attended by 35,717 adults and youth 12,241 questions answered by phone 5,520 office visitors helped 2,021,914 television, newspaper, radio website & magazine contacts per month
