  1. NuclearPower By: Cody Baird Andrew MacDonald Luke MacDonald

  2. Conntets • What is nuclear energy • Uses of Nuclear power • History of nuclear energy • Development of Nuclear Energy • Lifespan • Pros of energy source • Cons of energy source • Various jobs involved with this energy source

  3. WhatisNuclearEnergy • Nuclear energy is the process of taking uranium and splitting its atoms, when this is done heat is produced, this process is called nuclear fission.

  4. Uses of Nuclear Energy • Nuclear energy is used for many different things- • It can be used for powering submarines, • Can also be used to create electricity • And it is also used for purposes of war.

  5. HISTORY OFNUCLEAR ENERGY • The process of creating nuclear energy began in 1895 and in 1945. Most information was gathered in the last six years. • Through 1939 and 1945 most of the concentration was on the atomic bomb of WW2. • After the war focus was then shifted to harnessing this energy for electricity and running naval ships.

  6. NUCLEAR WEAPONS

  7. THE MANHATTAN PROJECT • Was a secret United States government project to build an atomic bomb from 1939 – 1945 • Einstein sent a letter to president Roosevelt regarding the project • The first atomic bomb was then exploded on July 16th 1945 for testing purposes only • One month after the test bomb was exploded two “nukes” were then dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki of Japan

  8. Development of Nuclear Energy • In nuclear fission, atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms, releasing energy. Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission to produce electricity. • When the atoms from uranium are split apart the produce heat the heat from the atoms is to water which makes stream and the stream produces is what runs the turbines to make electricity.

  9. Lifespan of Energy Source • With the current accessible uranium we have left nuclear power is estimated to last about 200 more years.

  10. Pros of Nuclear Energy • Little Pollution: A coal-fired power plant emits more radiation into the air than a nuclear power plant. • Reliability: Nuclear power plants need little fuel to keep going . • Safety: It is the easiest way to produce energy.

  11. Cons of Nuclear Energy • Meltdowns: Somewhat 15000 died in the surrounding area after exposure to the radiation. • Radiation: Only 100000 survived of the atomic bomb.

  12. Various Jobs involved with Nuclear Energy • Nuclear Engineers-work for the government, power plants and private laboratories. • Miners-get the uranium fuel
