  3. Layered Review Promotional layered review involves: • Regents • Provost & President • College of LSA • Departments & Programs

  4. Your role The promotion process is handled differently in each unit

Changes implemented last year Teaching Documentation: • Automated historical teaching record and comparison report on the MRS system – Print spreadsheets and attach to Appendix 4 • Appendix 4 (revised form last year) – Get academic input! • Rob Wilke is available for questions or concerns (rfw@umich.eduor 3-3139) 5

  6. Changes implemented last year Procedural Changes for Promotion to Professor: • 5 arms-length external review letters instead of 6 • 5 years of teaching documentation • Solicitation letter differs from promotion to Associate Professor - Be sure to use the proper solicitation letter!

Wrap-Up at the College • November 2012 to mid-February 2013 DEC reviews & College EC reviews and votes • February 13th, Provost’s deadline (estimated) • March 1st, Divisional associate dean’s will notify chairs/directors of College’s decisions • Early May, Provost communicates decisions • May 16th, Regents confirm promotion decisions 11

  12. When the EC Declines to Promote • Notification to Department • Appeal • Final EC Decision • Notification to Candidate 12

  13. Deadlines • Wednesday, November 7th (noon) for promotion with tenure & research faculty cases • Thursday, January 3rd (noon) for promotion to professor cases
