  4. Alcohol can damage a fetusanytime during the pregnancy even before she knows she is pregnant.

  5. All types of alcohol should be avoided There is no safe type or amount of that is known to be safe.

  7. Alcohol consumed anytime during pregnancy increases the risk of: • Birth defects • Lower weight and size • Abnormal facial features • Nervous system problems • Problems with learning

  8. Learning and behavior problems are lifelong.

  16. Using drugs anytime during pregnancy affects the unborn child • The larger the amount of a drug a mother uses, and the longer she uses it, the greater the risks to the unborn child.

  18. Using Drugs Increases Risks • Prenatal death • Premature birth • Miscarriage • Birth defects • Low birth weight • Small size • Small head

  19. Babies may have withdrawal symptoms after they are born. • Tremors • Sleeplessness • Muscle spasms • Feeding problems

  20. Drug Exposed Babies may also have: • Behavior problems • Learning problems • Suffer from Neglect and Abuse

  23. Shaken Baby Syndrome or SBS

  24. What is it? Child abuse that involves shaking a baby

  25. Legal Charges that may occur: • Child Protective Services is called and all children will be removed from the home • Charged with Assault on a Child • Charged with homicide if a baby dies from Shaken Baby Syndrome

  26. What it IS and is NOT SBS is… • Form of child abuse • Unique type of injury • From forceful, violent shaking • Preventable SBS is not… • Form of punishment • Preexisting condition • Always seen with bruises • Caused by car accidents, falling or rough playing

  27. Facts about SBS • 25% of babies shaken die from injuries • The remaining 75% can suffer severe brain damage • About 60% of victims die from their injuries later or suffer lifetime disabilities

  28. Other FACTS • SBS most common cause of death in abused children • There may be no visible signs of injury • There may not be signs of injury until the child starts school and shows learning or behavioral problems • Children as old as 5 or 6 have died from SBS

  29. Profile of a victim • Most are less than one year old • The majority are under 6 months old • Twins have a higher chance of being shaken

  30. Profile of a shaker • Most are male • Most are the baby’s father or mother’s boyfriend • Mothers, grandparents, stepparents, other relatives can shake babies • Anyone who becomes frustrated

  31. Reasons a baby is easily hurt • Heavy head- 25% of body weight • Weak neck muscles • Extra space inside the skull • Delicate veins that tear and bleed • easily • Brain is still developing

  32. What happens when you shake a baby? • First- baby may become visually impaired or blind • Next- loss of memory and emotion & suffer learning and behavior problems • Finally- baby loses the ability to speak and hear possibly paralyzed on one or both sides and can result in death

  35. Other common reasons • Frustration with: potty training picky appetite baby is sick and cranky

  36. Reasons baby cry • Is hungry • Needs to burp • Needs a diaper change • Is too hot or cold • Is getting sick • Is tired • Is over-stimulated

  37. Ways to soothe a crying baby • Create a new noise to distract • Sing to the baby • Show the baby something to look at • Rock the baby • Push the baby in a stroller • Take them for a car ride • Give them a warm bath
