  5. AdVENTURE an Oak Grove STEMS program AdVENTURE's mission is to engage all students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through relevant, hands-on curriculum so they will be successful global citizens in the 21st century.

  6. AdVENTURE an Oak Grove STEMS program AdVENTURE is made up of 125 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students working with 5 teachers in a “small school” setting, yet are part of the Herman Community.

  7. AdVENTURE an Oak Grove STEMS program AdVENTURE students begin at 8:35 and end at 2:40 with a five period a day schedule and a staggered break and lunch time.

  10. The First Day • On Monday, Aug. 23th at 8:05 am students will find their 1st period teacher on lists posted around school. They will report to their 1st period to receive their schedule and other important information. • School maps, rotating schedule and calendar are in the binder reminder. • Students who are having trouble locating their rooms or have a schedule issue can go to the flagpole for assistance.

  11. Necessary items for the first days of school! • Backpack or bag, no Red or predominantly maroon. • Three ring binder with dividers • Paper, pencil, pens • Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) novel • Full name on everything, not responsible for lost or stolen items • Student ID for new lunch card system

  12. School Hours • School hours are 8:05am to 2:30pm with the exception of late start Wednesdays. School begins at 9:20am on Wednesdays. • Students need to leave campus by 2:40 or be participating in school events.

  13. Student’s Classes • Language Arts • Math • Science • Social Studies • P.E. • Elective* AdVENTURE students do not take a separate elective it is woven into their other classes with a focus on technology and engineering.

  15. Lunch • Students must know their student ID to access the new electronic lunch cards. No more paper cards. • Snacks are sold at break time • Break begins at 10:00 for AdVENTURE and 10:11 for Herman – 15 minutes • Lunch begins at 12:00 for AdVENTURE and 12:10 for Herman – 35 minutes • Lunches are sold for $2.25 per lunch. • Milk is sold for $.35. • Free and reduced lunch applications will go home the first week of school.

PE Clothes • PE clothing information: Must purchase a PE shirt, shorts and lock. • Sweat clothes are optional. • Athletic shoes are also required. • Students are required to wear PE clothing. • PE clothing will be sold for $25.00. • AdVENTURE students will not be dressing out and will not purchase PE clothing.

  17. Lockers • Students purchase a PE lock and are assigned their own locker in the PE locker room. • Students may also elect to have a general locker, these are shared with another student.

  19. Safety is our number one priority! • Zero Tolerance • Closed campus- Visitors please check in through the front office • Students should stay away from Comanche Park and Nob Hill. • Anti-Bullying and Harassment Procedures • Emergency Preparedness

Safety is our number one priority • Safe behavior expected • Consequences for disruptive and unsafe behavior (Detention, Fri/Sat School, Suspension, Alternative Placement, Expulsion) • Bullying and harassment is not allowed – Mediation/Conflict Resolution/Harassment Contracts • Cyber Bullying, Disability Awareness, and Choices and Consequences Assemblies

Oak Grove School District Dress Code • Please read the complete dress code in the student handbook. • No Red clothing or accessories (shoes, shoe laces, hair ties, earrings, jackets, bags, lunch box, etc.) • Appearance must not be a distraction. • Finger tip length shorts and skirts even when wearing leggings or tights. • Garments must cover midriff even when arms are raised above the head. • Camouflage clothing of any color must stay at home!

Oak Grove School District Dress Code • No Gang Affiliated Attire: SJ Sharks, San Jose City Shirts, anything with 408, bandanas. • Maroon or blue shirts must have a logo bigger than a Frisbee. • No professional sports attire at all: shirts, hats, sweatshirts, etc. • Pants must fit at your waist. No underwear showing saggy pants may require modification. • Appropriate belts and belt buckles only. The belt must be worn appropriately around the waist and not hang down. No red, blue or maroon. • Hats and hoods may be worn outside only.

  23. Attendance – absences must be verified. Only excused for illness, doctors or dentist appt. or death in the family. Students whose absences exceed 10% of days enrolled (18 days) will be monitored. Tardies – Students need a pass to enter school if they arrive late. Unexcused tardies will result in a consequence. State law only allows excused tardies for doctor, dentist or illness. Rules and Regulations

  24. Rules and Regulations • Closed campus – all visitors must sign in. Students must be signed in and out by a parent or guardian. • Discipline – We maintain a strict code of disciple to ensure safety for all. Students may be sent to the office on a referral if discipline becomes an issue. • Severe discipline issues are dealt with immediately and could result in the loss of a privilege, detention, parent conference, suspension, administrative placement, police contact, expulsion or other.

  25. Rules and Regulations • Students are our responsibility to and from school. Please support your student in this by encouraging them to go straight to school and home. • Also, to respect the neighborhood. • Loitering at the park before and after school is not recommended along with loitering at Nob Hill on late start mornings.

  26. Rules and Regulations • Dangerous items are not allowed on campus and will result in Friday School to Suspension/Expulsion they include: Laser Pointers, Smoke Bombs, Fire Crackers, Poppers, Silly String, Lighters, Stink Bombs, Caps, etc.

Student transportation • Bike helmets are required. • Third warning may result in the loss of their biking privilege. • No skateboards, roller blades, roller blade shoes, or scooters allowed. • Children should go directly home after school. 2:40 Clear Campus bell, unless at a school sanctioned activity. i.e., Detention, Clubs, Sports, etc.

  28. Student Drop-off and Pick-up • Select a place away from Blossom and Shawnee Avenues and not by the park. • Traffic monitored by SJ Police. • Students must use crosswalks, Jay-walking is illegal. • Please do not park or make U-turns in parking lots. • Do not use the back staff parking to drop off. • AdVENTURE students should be dropped off near the side parking lot, which is near Blossom and Santa Teresa.

  29. Cell Phones • We support communication between parent and students however there are very specific rules for possession and use on Herman school campus. • Cell Phones must be off and out of site during school hours and at all time when in the building. If out and in use they will be confiscated. • Confiscated cell phones can be picked up after school only by a parent or guardian. • After the 3rd violation, students will lose the privilege of having a cell phone at school. • Parents do not text students during the day, if it is necessary to reach your student please call the school directly.

  30. SSR – Silent Sustained Reading • Research shows that students who read on a regular basis do better in their classes and score higher on tests. • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays students participate in an SSR period after morning announcements. • Students read from self-selected materials such as novels for 18 minutes. • Students need to come to school daily with an SSR book.

  31. Student Recognition Programs • Patriot Bucks – awarded by teachers/staff for positive behavior. • CJSF – students earning 3.0 GPA or higher activity days. • Student of the Month – selected by teachers based on monthly character traits. • Block H – awarded to students for participation in various activities. • Honors Night in January for academic recognition and in June for academic, civic and sports recognition. • Monthly Spirit Days with extended lunch periods for positive school wide behavior and cleanliness.

  32. Student Clubs and Activities • School Dances – 2:30-4:30pm, graduation 6:30-8:30pm, tickets are sold for $5.00, must meet guidelines to attend. • Student Body Association – student lead government and student officers. Must meet guidelines and/or be elected to some positions. • Monthly Dress-up Spirit Days and lunch time activities.

  33. Student Clubs and Activities • Clubs on campus: Garden, Games, History Club, Art, Kids in Technology, Campus Life, Yearbook, Music, etc. • Activities: Washington, D.C. field trip and (8th grade) reward trip. Band concerts, intramural sports, after school sports, talent show, assemblies.

  34. School Dances • 7th grade only – September • Halloween – October • Winter – December • Valentine’s – February • Spring – April • Graduation (8th only) – June *Free 6:30-8:30pm • All dances are $5.00, reduced rates for CJSF and Block H students, 2:30-4:30pm

  35. After School Sports • Cross Country, Wrestling, Softball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Track.
