  1. Vietnam Objective: be able to understand the Vietnam war up through LBJ’s announcement not to run both its causes and what happens during the war both at home and abroad By Anthony Miniaci (S.I. 2014 6th period)

  2. Intro to war • The country of Vietnam was originally a colony of the French, but after WW2 the country tried to gain independence. • Split along the 17th parallel with the Geneva treaty of 1954 • Tensions between North and south.

  3. In comes JFK AND beginning LBJ • JFK has to deal with communism around the world. • Aid the south and Diem against communism. • Diem regime ousted by S.V military • Kennedy wants to pull out troops • LBJ we will continue our support to Vietnam

  4. Domino theory • If one nation falls to communism so will the rest • The key to the entirety of south East Asia is Vietnam, if it falls so will all of the others. • Same thing in the Middle east and the rest of the world

  5. It begins, the gulf of Tonkin • the resolution, undeclared war on the north • Blank check • Gulf of Tonkin incident. Cause of the war.

  6. The war • Guns and butter. • The soldiers differ from those of previous wars • The deaths begin to pile up and the enemy is hard to kill • Operation Rolling Thunder.

  7. Domestic is turning on Lbj • Anti war starts up but is far from peaceful. On both sides of the debate • Cronkite goes to Vietnam • First televised war. • Atrocities committed by both sides. My Lai massacre and the Hanoi Hilton

  8. TeT& lbj’s decision not to run • Tet offensive, the final nail in LBJ’s coffin • LBJ faces opposition within his own party • LBJ announces that he will not run for or accept nomination for president.
