Hawaii is a group of 5 major islands located in the Pacific Ocean. Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, Molokai, & Kauai
Climate • The weather in Hawaii is sub-tropical, with temperatures ranging from 72°-79°year round. • Rainfall varies with Kauai being one of the wettest spot in the world with over 400 inches of rain a year.
Clothing • Aloha shirts became popular during World War II when soldiers purchased them as souvenirs of the beautiful islands. • Muumuus, which are loosely fitted dresses are worn by many women. • Grass skirts are traditional garb for hula dancers.
Food • If you have a “sweet tooth” Hawaii is the place to be. It’s main crop for export is sugar. • Other foods grown are pineapples and macadamia nuts • Hawaii island is famous for their Kona coffee beans.
Sports and Hobbies • Surfing and scuba diving are 2 favorite sport activities. • Deep-sea fishing can result in some large size marlin. • Snorkeling and swimming in the Pacific Ocean is always an inviting activity. • One can also look for puka shells on the beach.
Language • English is spoken here as the official language. • The Hawaiian language has only 12 letters A E H I K L M N O P U W. Every Hawaiian word and syllable ends with a vowel. Two consonants never occur without a vowel between them.
Places to Visit • Iolanai Palace – home of the Hawaiian government • Waimea Canyon – the western version of the Grand Canyon • Hawaii Volcano Park – home of Mt. Kilauea • Pearl Harbor – which marked the United States entry into WWII when it was bombed by Japan.
Other interesting things • Black sand beaches on Kona • Luaus • Hawaiian Cultural Center on Oahu State bird of Hawaii is the Nene.
Why I would like to live here. • No cold weather • No snow • Could go swimming and surfing everyday • Could spend time on the beach all year round
