Alcohol • Many consequences • Depressant drug • First effect is a relaxing one, then slows heart and lowers blood pressure, reduces inhibitions, self control, and judgement • Absorbed into blood stream within 2-10 minutes • Rate determined by food in the stomach • Rate also determined by body size • Once in the system nothing can be done to decrease effects until the body has burned the alcohol

  4. Alcohol and Pregnancy • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome • Mental handicaps, joint abnormalities, and slow physical growth

  5. Social Consquences • Drinking and driving • Domestic abuse • Date rape • Assault • Divorce

  6. Alcoholic: drinking is beyond persons control • Even if some alcoholics recover body can have lasting effects Why do people drink? social pressure, coping, low self esteem

Drugs • Drug: A substance, other than food that has an effect on one or more systems in the body. • Drug Use: Normal and correct use of a drug • Drug Misuse: taking a drug for its appropriate reason but with the wrong doses, times etc. • Drug Abuse: deliberately taking a substance for other than it’s intended purpose in a manner that can cause harm

  8. Dependency • Physical Dependency: occurs when the body chemistry is altered by the use of drugs • Addiction: physical dependance • Psychological Dependency: occurs when a drug users uses a drug as a crutch • Habituation: psychological dependence

Narcotics: used to induce sleep or reduce pain • Depressants: sedatives, slow down nervous system • Stimulants: speed up nervous system • Hallucinogens: mind altering drugs • Marijuana: stimulant, depressant, and hallucinogen depending on amount used • Inhalants: substances that give off fumes for a quick high • Steriods: synthetic testosterone that have tissue building properties • Prescription and over the counter ( OTC) available with doctors pres.
