Important Facts • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act(RCRA) • A National law put into place in 1976 and modified in 1989. • In 1989, the EPA established regulations and requirements for generators, transporters, destruction facilities, and disposal facilities in March of 1989. Also in that year the management of medical waste was introduced.

  3. Function • The law was passed to address the rising problem of accumulating waste and the potential risks to human health. • It gives EPA the authority to control hazardous waste from transportation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. • The act also set a framework for the management of non-hazardous wastes. • RCRA supplies the federal government with the power to authorize states to implement and enforce hazardous waste regulations and requirements as long as the state programs are as strict or broader in scope than the federal regulations. • Environmentally it deals with keeping the environment in check and helps to stop long term pollution.
