  1. Simple, Compound, Complex, & Compound-Complex In this section we’ll learn about: Simple Sentences Compound sentences Complex sentences Compound-complex sentences

  2. A simple sentence contains one independent clause. It may include one or more phrases. REMEMBER: an independent clause may have two subjects and one verb or one subject and two verbs. It is still simple. Examples: Dwightand Andyapplied for regional manager (2 subjects). Andyapplied and received the position (2 verbs). Simple Sentences

  3. COMPOUND SENTENCE • A compound sentence is a sentence made up of two or more independent clauses but nosubordinate (aka dependent) clauses. It may contain one or more phrases. • The two independent clauses should be of equal importance.

  4. COMPOUND SENTENCE Dwight Schrute loves power; he tortures Jim Halpert. Dwight Schrute loves power, and he tortures Jim Halpert. Dwight Schrute loves power; moreover, he tortures Jim Halpert.

  5. This is NOT a Compound Sentence Remember, a compound sentence is 2 independent clauses properly connected. IMPORTANT: The word AND does not always mean new independent clause. Review Slide #2!!

  6. COMPLEX SENTENCE • A complex sentence is a sentence made up of oneindependent clauseand at least onesubordinateclause.It may contain one or more phrases.

  7. COMPLEX SENTENCE Pam cancelled her wedding because she secretly loves Jim. Independent -Pam cancelled her wedding Subordinate – because she secretly loves Jim

Types of subordinate clauses Adverb Subordinate Clause (ADVSC) – begin with words such as BECAUSE, BEFORE, AFTER, DURING, EVEN THOUGH Adjective Subordinate Clause (ADJSC) – begin with words such as WHO, WHOM, THAT, WHICH Noun Subordinate Clause (NSC) – begin with words such as WHO, WHOM, THAT , WHICH

  9. COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE • A compound-complex sentence is a sentence made up of more than oneindependent clause and at least onesubordinate clause. It is the combining of a compound sentence with a complex sentence. It may contain one or more phrases.

  10. COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE Although he likes pranks, Michael is kind, and he bails out his friends. Compound – Michael is kind (independent) AND he bails out his friends (independent) Complex – Although he likes pranks (subordinate)

Simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex? • Dwight wants to be manager, but he will not be effective. • Darryl is the coolest because he plays keyboards. • Pam and Jim sit near one another at work. • Oscar and Angela do not always agree, but they both dislike Creed when he takes off his shoes.
