  1. Valley & Ridge Region The Valley & Ridge Region is located between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains. The Allegheny Mountains have a higher elevation. ALL of these mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain Range.

  2. Industries and Jobsin the Valley & Ridge • Lumbering • Grain Farming • Apple and Peach Orchards • Raising livestock • Dairy • Beef • Sheep • Poultry- (Chicken & Turkeys)

  3. The Great Valley • Valley- an area of low land between hills or mountains • The valley lies between the Blue Ridge & Allegheny Mtns. • Shenandoah Valley is Virginia’s Largest Valley. • The Shenandoah River runs through it. • Massanutten Mountain is located here. • Many people come here in the winter time and ski.

  4. The Cumberland Gap • Gap- a break or opening; such as a pass through mountains. • It is located in the southwestern corner of Virginia. • It is called the GATEWAY to the WEST. • Pioneers crossed through this when the were doing the western expansion.

  5. Winchester • This is the oldest city in the Great Valley • Each year there is an Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester. • It is one of the 20 most populated cities in Virginia

  6. Harrisonburg • James Madison University is located here.

  7. Caverns • Caverns were formed by underground rivers that wore away rocks. • Luray Caverns is a popular tourist attraction. • There are also Endless Caverns and Grand Caverns. • Stalactites- form when minerals in water drip from the walls and ceilings in caves. • Stalagmites- build upward from the cave floors

  8. Natural Chimneys • These are tall, stone towers. • They are located in Augusta County. • Every August there is a jousting tournament here.

  9. Natural Bridge • Natural Bridge is a stone bridge over 90 feet long. • It has been said that George Washington carved his initials on this bridge.

  10. Hot Springs • There is a famous hot spring in Bath County. • Hot rocks under the ground heat the water. It bubbles up in places called hot springs. • Some come to relax in the water. Others believe it might cure illnesses.
