  2. God vs. EgyptExodus 1-12 Genesis 15:13-14

  3. Oppression of IsraelExodus 1-2 A king that “did not know Joseph” (1:8) Oppression was to keep them from multiplying – but they still did (1:9-12) They were to kill the boys, but they feared God instead (1:13-21) They were to cast sons into the Nile (1:22)

  4. Oppression of IsraelExodus 2 Amram & Jochebed hid their son for 3 months (1-2) They had to trust God’s protection (3-4) God intervened He was found by Pharaoh’s daughter His mom was paid to nurse him Moses received the best education Egypt could offer

  5. MosesExodus 2:11-25 Moses killed an Egyptian (vs. 11-12) His sin was found out & he fled to Midian (vs. 13-15) Moses could not deliver his people by his own power He spent 40 years tending sheep in Midian, married & had a son (vs. 16-22)

  6. The Call of MosesExodus 3-4 The Burning Bush – 3:1-4:17 God would free His people & send Moses to do it (3:7-10) Moses deferred & God assured (11-12) Who is sending me? (3:13-15) “I AM” = “to be” = self existent one

  7. The Call of MosesExodus 3-4 God would free them only through His hand and miracles (3:19-22) God assured Moses with miracles Staff became serpent then staff again (4:1-5) Hand became leprous & then restored (4:6-9)

  8. The Call of MosesExodus 4 Moses tried to defer again because of lack of eloquence (10) God would be with his mouth (11-12) Aaron appointed as spokesman (13-17)

  9. Moses Arrives in EgyptExodus 5-6 They believed & worshiped (4:27- 31) Pharaoh defied the LORD(5:1-5) Pharaoh increased oppression (5:6-14) Pharaoh beat the foremen (5:15-21) Moses prayed (5:22-23)

  10. Moses Arrives in EgyptExodus 6 God would compel Pharaoh (6:1-9) By an outstretched arm & great judgements (vs. 6) They would know He is the LORD (vs 7) The people did not listen (vs. 9)

God’s Assurance & PurposeExodus 7:1-7 God would be with their mouths (vs. 1-2) Hebrews & Egyptians would know He was the Lord (6:7; 7:5) Hebrews would be His people & He would be their God (6:7) God would harden Pharaoh’s heart to multiply His signs & wonders (6:3) & make a mockery of the Egyptians (10:1-2)

  12. First ConfrontationExodus 7:8-13 Aaron’s rod became a serpent Against Psylli (Egyptian magicians) Pharaoh’s heart was hardened – even after Aaron’s staff/serpent at the staffs/serpents of the magicians

  13. Water Turned to BloodExodus 7:14-25 Against Nile river – related deities: Hapi/Apis; Isis; Khnum; Osiris All water in Nile & tributaries, pools & reservoirs turned to blood; all fish die The magicians replicated it & Pharaoh’s heart was hardened (22-24)

  14. Frogs Cover the LandExodus 8:1-15 Against Heqet, goddess of birth Magicians got frogs to come up, but could not get rid of them (7) Pharaoh relented (8-9) Pharaoh hardened his heart when the frogs left (10-15)

  15. Gnats Throughout the LandExodus 8:6-19 Dust of earth became small gnats (biting midges – “no-see-ums”) (16-17) Against Set, god of desert; Hathor / Nut Magicians could not do it, recognized it was “the finger of God” (18-19) Pharaoh’s heart was hardened (19)

  16. Swarming Insects Throughout the LandExodus 8:20-32 Swarms of insects in Egypt, but not Goshen (vs. 20-24) Against Shu; Isis; Re; Uatchit Pharaoh tried compromise, then relented (25-28) Pharaoh hardened his heart after the swarming insects were gone (29-32)

  17. Death of Egyptian LivestockExodus 9:1-7 All livestock in the Egyptian fields would die, but none of Israel’s (1-6) Against Hathor, Apis, Mnevis Pharaoh heart was hardened (7)

  18. Boils on EgyptiansExodus 9:8-17 Soot from Kiln causes boils on all Egyptians & their animals (8-10) Against Sekhmet; Sunu; Isis The magicians had boils on them (11) The LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart (12)

  19. The Lord’s Hardening of Pharaoh Exodus 9:13-17 Pharaoh hardened his heart 6 times God now confirmed him in it God allowed him to remain only to show His power and proclaim His name through His judgements on Pharaoh Don’t presume upon God’s patience

  20. Hail Upon the LandExodus 9:18-35 A severe hail storm would kill anything left in Egyptian fields, man or beast. No hail in Goshen (18-26) Against Nut; Isis; Osiris; Seth; Set Pharaoh admitted sin (27-32) When Hail ceased, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened (34-35)

  21. Locust PlagueExodus 10:1-20 A locust plague like none before or after (3-6; 12-15) Against Serapis, Isis, Seth, Nut, Osiris Pharaoh confessed sin (16-17) After locust were gone, the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart (18-20)

  22. Thick DarknessExodus 10:21-29 “A darkness that could be felt,” only the sons of Israel had light (21-23) Against all Sun gods: Ra, Aten, Atum & Horus – also goddesses Nut & Hathor Pharaoh tried another unacceptable compromise (24-26) The Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart (27)

  23. Death of the First BornExodus 11-12 All Egyptian first born humans & cattle would die Against Osiris, Mi, Heqet, Isis, and Pharaoh’s first-born, considered a god

  24. Preparation for PassoverExodus 11-12 Select a year old lamb on 10th of month Kill it on 14th, spread blood on doorposts & lintel Roast the lamb & eat it with unleavened bread & bitter herbs Eat in haste with loins girded & sandals on – don’t go outside until morning

  25. PassoverExodus 11-12 The LORD would pass through the land & kill all first born, but would “passover” houses with the blood. The passover meal was to be celebrated yearly from then on as a memorial

  26. The ExodusExodus 12:31-51 Pharaoh told the sons of Israel to leave, worship to LORD, and bless him (31-32) The LORD gave them favor & Egyptians gave them silver, gold, clothes (33-36 cf 3:22) About 600,000 men (~ 2 million total) (37-39) 430 years to day from when Israel came to Egypt

  27. Conclusions The LORD is superior to all the pantheon of Egyptian gods and goddesses He kept His promises to Abraham & Jacob Israel would be His people & He would be their God God is still faithful to keep all His promises
