Social Anxiety vs Shyness! Shania- ISU.
Shyness: • Its completely normal! • Is natural from birth it helps us develop a sense of self. • It is normal to be shy but it usually goes away.
Stage fright or public speaking is normal for many people. • Shyness is an average intimidation or small fright of new groups or of a new person. • Usually lessens as someone grows up.
Symptoms: • Nervousness at first • Shortness of breath • Elevated heart rate • Trouble speaking • These usually don’t get really bad, and they should go away as the person becomes more accustomed to their surroundings.
Social anxiety: • Social Anxiety is high levels of anxiety or anxiety attacks during social interactions • Similar to shyness some people never grow out of it and it becomes a lifelong battle. • If left untreated it gets worse • It can be life stopping.
Social anxiety triggers: • Groups of unknown people • Fear of a presentation weeks before that its due • Far of being judged • Fear what people think of them • Leaving home • Work
Anxiety attacks: • Many people living with social anxiety feel anxiety attacks in social situations • There are many symptoms but these are the most common ones:
Effects of social anxiety: • Many people who have Social anxiety don’t even want to go outside at all so this affects their lives so much • It also affects them getting jobs as well as keeping them • People with SA are more likely to live off of welfare, live in poverty because they cannot live normal lives.
Treatments: • Medication: -anti-depressants are common • Therapy:- usually with one on one -if more comfortable group sessions • Many people with social anxiety never get help as they fear going to a doctor and talking about their problems, they fear being judged.
Both: • They may be similar but social phobia suggests that it is a ‘need’ to avoid any social interaction, but social anxiety is high levels of anxiety during social interactions. • Symptoms are similar with both but more extreme and life stopping for someone with social anxiety, both need to be confronted in order to get over them.
Facts: • Statistics Canada says that Just over 2 million Canadians aged 15 or older reported a "lifetime history" of social anxiety disorder, or they had symptoms at some point in their lives. • This represents about 8% of the population.(2002)
Also women were slightly more likely than men to have both lifetime and current social anxiety disorder. • The symptoms of social anxiety lasted an average of 20 years, longer if left untreated • Selective mutism is the most common form of social anxiety in children
Social anxiety mainly genetic; hereditary • Could also be caused by ptsd- something happened in the past and now they fear people and social situations • Social anxiety is the 3rd most largest mental disorder in the world today.
Shyness is momentarily, social anxiety can affect someone for their while life. • Social Anxiety is more common in women than men, but there is no varying extreme of symptoms, they are seen in both men and women.
In the video, the people with social anxiety portray all the symptoms, they fear people, this woman has severe anxiety when it comes to social situations. • For her it was life stopping, I do think that this is one of the more extreme cases but she was trying to get help, she did go out side. She was making progress.
Are we a society of anxiety? • Society has changed a lot and there are more expectations to be much more social in situations. • Also people are less dependant on others and do stuff alone, so there is more pressure.
Are we a society so social anxiety? • Everyone is shy and given different situations it can be more prominent and extreme. • I don’t think as a society we are a society of anxiety. • As a society we are already expected to be social, jobs require it, just daily life make us be social and society would not be able to function if we weren't social.
