  1. Advances in assistive devices -- wheelchair There’s a high demand for assistive technology for mobility that includes wheelchairs, walking devices and other aids. Patients or older adults who find it difficult to walk around or do their daily activities use one of these devices to make life simple. However, a wheelchair is also not a complete solution for mobility. Most of the time, the patient actually requires a helping hand from someone to be able to use the device. Assistance to push the chair, to help getting on or off the bed, support using the bathroom or support in doing several other things to actually get around are inevitable. With an increasing number of aging population and fewer caregivers, assistance may not be available all the time. In this scenario, there’s a significant need for improved assistive devices. In the wake of providing better patient care, manual wheelchairs have improved over time. From one-size-fits-all to it has grown to specialized ones that cater to the individual needs. Nowadays, custom-fit, lightweight wheelchairs are high in demand to ensure an active lifestyle.

  2. Several technologies – such as biomechanics, materials science, electronics, mechanical design, robotics, etc. – apply to design an advanced wheelchair that can allow patients to perform independently. It provides improved functionality, more independence and better lifestyle even with a wheelchair. Many older people or patients who are trapped to wheelchairs can do most of their daily activities independently with a mobility device that provides better features. Powered wheelchairs are the most admired ones to enhance functional independence for people with disabilities. Such wheelchairs provide better degree of freedom while ensuring comfort and convenience of the user. Powered wheelchairs with reclining seats are great for mobility and user comfort. These are adjustable and can be controlled without assistance. While these devices are suitable for people with severe disability, these shouldn’t be used by older adults with cognitive problems. Even more advanced wheelchairs are those equipped with STS or Sit-to-Stand facility. Sitting to standing is one of the most fundamental aspects of daily routine. However, wheelchair bound patients have to face this difficulty every day. Also, sitting for prolonged hours has its own health risks. Wheelchairs with hip-up functions or STS facility can make life easier for these patients. There are several STS models available in the market with controls that allow patients to exercise their back and adjust their posture. Research is still going on to come up with even better versions of mobility aids for a better and independent life even with severe disabilities. Source URL: bit.ly/2VYJ0hQ
