  2. WV State Medical Association I am here to address you on behalf of the WVSMA. WVSMA: 152 yo., largest physician advocacy organization serving physicians across the state. We are a very diverse group of physicians, the go across all field of medicine and specialties, ages, practice models, locations, and background training ( MD, DO, Int’l)

Engaging with lawmakers and lobbying for patient, public health, and physician interests. We are highly active in the • Protect and Promote the Practice of Medicine • Protect and Promote Public Health

WV State Medical Association When it comes to healthcare and practice of medicine Leadership and Involvement Physicians took the back seat in health care policy • The practice of Medicine is controlled at many levels • Laws, regulations, and policies • Payment • Employment • Smart people, who may have limited Medical knowledge, determine what we can, should, and cannot do • Too many non-healthcare people make decisions for us Medicine in beyond statistics and reported measures: Art and Science of Medicine • Voice of WV Docs • Physician satisfaction

Value of Physician Leadership Leadership and Involvement Physicians took the back seat in health care policy • Physicians have the intellect to lead healthcare, but most of us do not perceive ourselves as change makers • For a while, there were no perceived major issues • Advocacy is a marathon, not a sprint or seasonal sport! • Too many non-healthcare people make decisions for us Medicine in beyond statistics and reported measures: Art and Science of Medicine • Voice of WV Docs • Physician satisfaction

Value of Physician Leadership Leadership and Involvement Physicians took the back seat in health care policy Value of Physician Leadership When it comes to healthcare and practice of medicine • Without Physician Leaders, the practice of Medicine is regulated by others • with very limited Medical knowledge • have other priorities • are targeted by competing interest groups • Join, Engage and Educate them • Change is inevitable • If we do not lead change, change will lead us • Too many non-healthcare people make decisions for us Medicine in beyond statistics and reported measures: Art and Science of Medicine • Voice of WV Docs • Physician satisfaction

  9. Young Physician Section target audience: residents and early career physicians. Young physicians participate by choice, not by default. The values of our Association were developed over many decades to reach its current level of maturity, whereas our social priorities evolved and diversified rather quickly. It takes a lot of engagement and input from younger members to move our association forward

  10. Our mission is to serve and represent the young physicians of West Virginia Our vision is to be a major path for future leadership in Medicine. Our goals are to increase young physician contribution to the future of WVSMA, and help evolve it to match contemporary interests.   11. Young Physician Section • Young Physicians are leaders in Medicine • It is never to early to start • Incorporate new values and models of engagement • Incorporate new priorities • Join and do it ourselves: no one will do it for us OUR WAY

  12. Young Physician Section • Develop programs that are: • valuable and interesting • compliment young physicians' readiness to start their careers- beyond clinical skills. • Learn about and Participate in Advocacy and Organized Medicine • Support our members as they engage in leadership
