  25. PORTABILITY AND CONNECTIVITY Software Portability Products • Software Portability: An application is portable across a class of environments to the degree that the effort required to transport and adapt it to a new environment in the class is less than the effort of redevelopmentSee the following website: http://www.cs.wvu.edu/~jdm/research/portability/home.htmlTools for portable specifications, design, implementation, testing and debugging, documentation, porting and maintenance • Virtual Private Network (VPN)-VPN is a cost effective, wide area network (WAN) solution for businesses of all sizes. It allows you to configure high-performance, site-to-site remote access and intranet/extranet solutions to a secure, standards-based environment. A VPN allows remote employees to access corporate resources through intermediate firewalls, proxies, NAT devices, and the Internet • Private Line Servicesgive you peace of mind because your internal data, voice, and video traffic is transmitted securely and quickly on a private connection. If you need to protect your business's domestic business communication traffic, Domestic Private Line services and network capabilities will meet your needs. Emerging Technologies Committee - 12/7/01

  26. PORTABILITY AND CONNECTIVITY Security Issues • VPN Security--VPNs are now the method of choice for most corporations when it comes to remote access. Unfortunately, many enterprises believe their VPN will completely secure remote access to sensitive corporate data from would be crackers. The fact is, however, that users accessing a VPN through an Internet connection often overlook the exposure that they create for the enterprise. There has been a substantial increase in the number and types of internet based attacks to subvert end user machines. In the past such attacks were carried out by a select group of highly skilled crackers. Now with the advent of easy to use cracking scripts there is a new type of threat, the Script Kiddies. With a few scripts and little knowledge the teenager next door could be trying to crack your machine • Wireless LAN Security--Wireless Access Points (APs) are quickly becoming a convenient and popular method of enabling wireless connectivity in enterprises. Office workers can easily take their laptops or wireless devices with them to meetings or anywhere else within range and maintain a network connection without the cables. Unfortunately, many enterprises don't take in to account the security ramifications of putting up or allowing indiscriminate placement of APs. Currently wireless APs offer very little in terms of security and are prone to several types of attacks. They are difficult to securely implement and offer an easy backdoor into your enterprise network. Emerging Technologies Committee - 12/7/01

  27. PORTABILITY AND CONNECTIVITY Security Issues(con’t) • Server Security--Your servers store and control critical services and data. Servers operate as data repositories, email servers, printing platforms, web servers, databases, directory services, and much, much more. Unfortunately, deployed security measures to protect servers today are inadequate against the latest attacks and exploits. Currently, out of the box Operating Systems for servers offer very little in the way of default security settings, and are thus prone to unwelcome intrusions and data corruption, weaknesses that can disrupt business operations for hours, even days. Furthermore, keeping track of the latest exploits and patches needed to maintain server security can sap IT resources and time. An unprotected server is the ideal window of opportunity for a hacker or disgruntled employee- steal corporate data and shut down a network, all in a few, simple steps. • Internal Security--Independent analysts estimate that sixty to seventy percent of the risk to enterprise information comes from internal sources. The risk is high because internal users (including contractors) often have broad access to, and extensive knowledge of, valuable corporate information. Consequently, accidental or malicious behavior initiated from the workstation of an internal user can cause severe damage. Emerging Technologies Committee - 12/7/01

  28. PORTABILITY AND CONNECTIVITY Security Issues(con’t) • Healthcare Security--the global access and sharing of healthcare information in a secure private manner, anywhere, anytime. Finding and implementing a security solution that that fits with your companies needs should be a first priority. By focusing on the HIPAA security requirements for information being accessed, transmitted and/or stored in electronic format, a basic solution for all HIPAA-related security questions needs to be addressed. Products that cover the features that your enterprise must implement to fulfill the HIPAA security requirements need to be identified. Addition needs for security solutions that allow you to add other optional features to build a security solution that fits your organizational needs, without overspending on other security technologies that may not actually be required is another must for any corporation. Emerging Technologies Committee - 12/7/01

  29. PORTABILITY AND CONNECTIVITY Security Issues(con’t) • Personal Firewalls--an advanced, user-friendly personal firewall -- it is a bi-directional intrusion defense system. Your personal computer should be completely protected from malicious hackers and other intruders while preventing unauthorized access from your computer to a network. In essence, Personal Firewalls make your protected machines invisible to the outside world. That makes Personal Firewalls a must-have security measure for any PC that connects to a private network or the public Internet. Once you've been compromised, every other network you connect to is at risk; including your home, business and online bank accounts. No matter where you use your computer, whether remote or behind a corporate firewall, whether dial-up or an always-on broadband Internet connection, Personal Firewalls gives you complete confidence that your precious business, personal, financial and other data is safe and secure. If that isn't enough, Personal Firewalls includes advanced active-scan vulnerability assessment to pinpoint your weaknesses and fine-tune your security policy. 30. PORTABILITY AND CONNECTIVITY Security Issues(con’t) • Secure Access-- develop secure networking products for computers in varying home and work environments. The Internet access product-lines deliver not only best-of-breed networking solutions for the home, home-office and enterprise branch office, but also enterprise-class security. When combined with the ease-of-use, configurability and durability of other security technologies, the product-line is the perfect networking solution for environments of all shapes and sizes.
