  3. Reading GoalCharacterization This week we will be reading the Marble Champ by Gary Soto. As we read, we will look at what the author tells us about the characters through their words and actions. This is called characterization. Good readers pay attention to the information the author provides about the characters to better understand who the characters are and why they act the way they do.

  14. Reading Goal: Characterization Imagine a person who just won a million dollars. How do you think the person feels? How would you be able to tell how the person who won the lottery felt?

  15. Characterization • We are constantly observing people around us. We can usually thinks and feels by analyzing what the person says and does. • A persons words and actions can tell you about the person’s personality and character. • Authors give us clues about characters through characters’ words and actions. This is called characterization. • By focusing on what the characters say and do, the author gives us, the reader, clues about the characters’ thoughts and feelings. • As good readers, we must be able to analyze the characters words and actions to learn as much as we can about them. Let’s read a small passage and look at some clues!

  16. Maria slams the front door and storms into the kitchen. “Hello, honey! You’re home early,” her father says with a smile. “How is your day going?” Maria rolls her eyes and pouts, “It’s raining. I don’t like the way my day is going.” Maria’s father remembers, “That’s right! Today is Julie’s pool party. I guess it is cancelled. Well, now you’ll have time to start preparing for your science test on Monday.” “I don’t want to study!” Maria exclaims. “Today is supposed to be a fun day!” “Hmm,” Maria’s father ponders as he puts his arm around her. “Maybe you and I can go to a movie this afternoon. Then you can start studying after dinner. How would that be?” “OK,” said Maria.

  17. Characterization In this passage, I learned that Maria is very disappointed that her friend’s party was cancelled. I can tell this because of her actions. She slams the door when she enters the house. Instead of telling us that Maria is upset, the author gives us hints by using words like pot and storms to describe her behavior. I can tell that Maria’s father is an optimistic person. He looks on the bright side and tells Maria something that she can do instead of going to the party. When he recognizes that Maria is upset, he comforts her by putting his arm around her and he suggests they go to the movies. I think he want to cheer Maria up. His actions and words show that he is a caring father.
