  5. Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) recognises that working with communities is a good way to deliver woodland benefits, strengthen communities, and encourage active citizenship.  We want to work with the full range of communities and stakeholders in ways that help deliver shared objectives.

Woods In and Around Towns (WIAT) Challenge Fund • bring urban woodland into sustainable management and improve recreation facilities by carrying out an agreed programme of work. • woods within 1 km of settlements with a population of over 2000 people (the WIAT area). The aim is to regenerate the woodland environment close to centres of population, improving the quality of life for people living and working there.

  9. Woods In and Around Towns (WIAT) Challenge Fund What type of work is supported: • development of woodland management plans • silvicultural work to improve woodland structure and condition • construction of new or improved recreation facilities including footpaths. • Staff costs for delivery

Woods In and Around Towns (WIAT) Challenge Fund Who can apply? • Owners & occupiers of woodland >1 ha in WIAT area How much? • 75% FCS contribution to project costs NB: • No EU or central Government funding as match • 2 quotes /tenders to support application • Claim on receipted invoices • application area must comprise at least 40% woodland.

  11. Forestry for People (F4P) Challenge Fund Supports local involvement in woodland projects for health, learning and strengthening communities (including the WIAT area). Examples of this might include: • setting up walking initiatives • developing natural play areas • delivering rehabilitation programmes in woodland • developing continuous professional development (CPD) programmes for teachers • establishing volunteer groups • developing not-for-profit initiatives such as green exercise projects

  14. Forestry for People (F4P) Challenge Fund How much? • Up to 90% FCS contribution where the project cost is up to £5,000 • Up to 75% FCS contribution where the project cost is up to £20,000 • Up to 50% FCS contribution where the project cost is up to or exceeding £70,000

Community Seedcorn Fund • Eligible activities include: • Schemes that promote physical activity e.g. walking schemes, safe routes to school, natural play and adventure play. • Developing materials that promote the health and well-being benefits of using woodlands. • Facilitation of volunteering for skills training, health improvement and community development. • Establishment of volunteer groups and the induction of volunteers. • Providing resources to involve communities in the decision making process of managing their local woodland. The fund aims to supports community groups and organisations that are encouraging and facilitating greater use of woods by people to derive health, well-being and community benefits.

  16. Community Seedcorn Fund • The level of funding will be on a sliding scale: • 100% for projects up to a total cost of £5000 • Up to 90% for projects with a total cost of between £5001- £20,000 • Up to 75% for projects with a total cost exceeding £20,000

  17. Seedcorn Fund Small budget held by the Conservancies to support local small scale activities and exploring activities that could deliver against SFS.

  18. SRDP Axis 1 - improving the competitiveness of agriculture and forestry by supporting restructuring, development and innovation. Axis 2 - improving the environment and the countryside by supporting land management. (WIG and SMF) Axis 3 - improving the quality of life in rural areas and encouraging diversification of economic activity. (Access, information, skills development)
