What is BCATS? • Buncombe County Alternative to Suspension • For students who are out-of-school suspended • Credit for attendance. • Opportunity for students to keep up with classes. • Provide coping strategies & decision making skills.
Eligible for BCATS • 5 Days OSS or more or 2nd 3-Day OSS • Fighting. • Threatening. • Possession of nuisance items. • Tobacco use. • Hazing. • Disruptive behavior. • Inappropriate language.
Ineligible for Consideration • First 3 day OSS • Physical violence toward school employee. • Threat toward school employee. • Extortion or Blackmail • Distributing illegal drugs • Bringing or using a firearm • Arson • Sexual Offense
Possible Consideration for Eligibility • Behavior that incites a Riot • Theft or Vandalism • Indecent Exposure • Sexual Harassment • Possession of a Weapon • Gang related activity • Possession/Use of Illegal Drugs School administrator & BCATS staff will review students whose violations fall into this category.
Gaining Acceptance into BCATS • The principal, assistant principal, and/or counselor must contact the BCAT program at least 24 hours before a student starts. (BCATS@bcsemail.org) • School work must be sent from base-school teachers. Credit given for BCATS assignment. • Parent/guardian consent form signed (or verbal consent given to school official)
Gaining Acceptance into BCATS • Emergency placement can be gained by contacting: • Tiffany Little • David Thompson • Superintendent’s Office. • School official will be notified by BCATS if/when a student may start.
