  2. When you are adding and subtracting, the things have to be the same to add or subtract them This is different then multiplying and dividing, where it involves grouping. remember

  3. If the are already “alike” things Which means the have same denominator Or they are cut into the same size pieces Then you can just add many of them you have If denominator same

  4. 2/3 + 1/3 • So I have one third and I have two thirds • So I can add the thirds together • I have three thirds • 3/3 example

  5. 1/7 +3/7 4/7 4/5 +3/5 7/5 You try

  6. Remember when you are adding, you have to add “alike” things you can not add cars and shoes together So just make them the same Different denominator

Use your skills in equivalent fractions • Create equivalent fractions of both until you have created fraction that are the “same” • Easier way- Study the denominators and find their least common multiple, huh! Multiply each number by the same number until they reach the same number Make them the same

  8. 2/5 + 3/7 Multiplies of 5: 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40 Multiples of 7:7,14,21,28,35,42 35 if the first they have alike So 35 if the least common multiple You try to make them “alike”

  10. 3/10 +7/9 • We know we need to make them 90 • So we multiply 10 by 9 • We multiply 9 by 10 • To make sure the fractions stay equivalent, we have to multiply the top and bottom by the same • So 3/10 becomes 27/90 • So 7/9 becomes 70/90 now make them alike

  12. 2/3 + 4/5 Turn them into 15’s Multiply first fraction, top and bottom, by 5 Multiply second fraction, top and bottom, by 3 So we get 10/15 +12/15 Add tops 22/15 You try whole process
