  1. Technical Working Group for Experimental Storm Surge Warning Rich Bandy, Bill Sammler, Matt Moreland, Tina Stall, Bob Burke, Aimee Fish, Matt Glazewski, Jamie Rhome, Hugh Cobb, Ray Tanabe, Shannon White, John Kuhn, Tim Schott

  2. Recommendations • Need to thoroughly assess and integrate results from social science research • WFOs wish to deliver the same Storm Surge Warning 365 days a year, regardless of meteorological and/or astronomical causes • Suggested warning name is “Storm Surge Warning” or “Extreme Coastal Flood Warning” • The warning would be issued for truly extreme inundation events, such as: mid-Atlantic Veteran’s Day Storm of 2009, Hurricane Ike (2008), Florida west coast inundation of March 1993.

  3. Recommendations • NO desire for new “product” or new PIL! • Text issuance: The introduction of an experimental VTEC Storm Surge Warning will involve adding experimental VTEC into an operational product. It is unclear on which operational product is the best • Collaboration between NHC and WFOs, using the probabilistic hurricane inundation surge height (PHISH) guidance products, is the path forward. Early thoughts recommend developing a SmartTool to integrate the PHISH guidance with real-time SLOSH inputs.

  4. Recommendations • Graphical issuance: Warning must be conveyed areally, preferably using the 2.5 km NDFD grids. The use of graphics and GIS formats will be important for communicating and disseminating the warning. • Initial development efforts focused on tropical cyclone events. Future development efforts will focus on extratropical storm surge, with collaboration envisioned with OPC and TAFB. Need for development of extratropical storm surge inundation guidance. • Continue in-house efforts for 2012 • Will work closely with watch/warning collaboration group • Looking for additional WFOs to participate • Work done with Hurricane Irene follows
