Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Report by SV
Setting • This book takes place on an island in the middle of nowhere, where a bunch of boys are stranded. • The boys sleep down on the beach where they have huts a swimming pool and trees full of fruit. • It is a fairly large Island but big enough for them to walk all the way around. There is a thick jungle full of creepers and inhabited by wild pigs.
Characters • Ralph: Ralph is around 12 or 13 years old and he is elected as chief . Ralph has longish blonde hair and is tall and lanky. He is a good leader and he is smart but he is not all about having fun and some of the others disagree with him. • Jack: Jack is as old as Ralph, he has beady eyes and red hair. Jack is jealous of Ralph because Ralph is chief. Jack leads the group of hunters, former quire boys, to get food for everyone. Jack is a little rebellious, he is also smart but he can be selfish and cruel.
More Characters • Piggy: Piggy is nicknamed Piggy because of his size. He is kind of sensitive, he has asthma and wears glasses but he is very smart. He tends to annoy the other boys at times and is teased a lot. His spectacles are used to light the fire. • Simon: Simon is a couple years younger than Ralph, he is fairly quiet but he and Ralph become friends. Simon pays attention to everything and notices things others don’t. • Sam and Eric: Sam and Eric are twins and are also friends of Ralph, they try to help Ralph even when everyone else is against him.
Favorite Character • Simon is my favorite character because he is quiet and smart. • He is one of the first boys to realize that they are turning against each other and are becoming barbaric. • He Is also the only person who finds that the beast is a dead man who landed on the mountain. Simon tries to tell the boys this but they mistake him for the beast, ironically, and kill him.
Other Important Things • The Pigs Head • The Pigs Head was placed on a stick after the Pig was killed as an offering to the nonexistent beast. The boys believe in the beast. The head is a symbol of what the boys have become and it talks to Simon in his head stating this. The pig is The Lord Of The Flies. This is a very important part of the story. • The Beast from air • During a battle a man parachutes from his plane and lands on top of the mountain. All the kids think he is some type of beast sitting on the mountain top. This is important because it scares them and helps turn them to savagery. • The Beast from water • One of the Littler boys, called littl’uns , thinks he sees a “beastie” which no one believes in at first. The older boys think it may be a snake but then the littl’un tells them it came from the sea. This also makes them afraid and helps make them savage.
Summary • Ralph meets piggy and others on beach • Ralph and piggy find the conch and blow it to summon the others • Ralph is elected as chief • The boys start a fire on top of the mountain to be rescued • A little one goes missing and the fire goes out • Rumors about the beast spread • Ralph and Jack begin to fight • The parachute man lands on the mountain top and they think it is the beast
The boys split into different groups Ralphs, and Jacks • The pigs head is placed on the stake • Jack holds a feast at his camp and they begin a dance • Simon stumbles into the dance and is mistaken for the beast and killed • Ralph, Sam and Eric, and Piggy go to jacks side to reason with jack • Jacks second in command Roger drops a boulder and kills Piggy, Sam and Eric are captured by Jack • The Savages go on a hunt for Ralph and try and kill him • Ralph runs to the beach and sees a boat and grownups standing on the beach, The navy officer is told that two kids were killed.
What I would have changed • If I was William Golding I would not have changed anything in the ending of the book because, although it is a rather sad ending I think it is perfect. It does not need any changes.
MESSAGE • I think the message of this story is that even the most civilized, structured society can fall apart easily. • The author suggests that good leadership is important and it is important to compromise and agree with others.
I would recommend this book for someone else to read because it is one of those books that hooks you and you can’t stop reading it. • I wouldn’t recommend it if the person could not put up with some violence and blood. • Overall it is a great book with a very interesting plot.
Lord Of The Flies A sad story about what can happen to civilized people when rules are taken away
