Terms to Know • MTW: Machine Tool Wire, UL listed • AWM: Appliance Wiring Material, UL recognized • NFPA: National Fire Protection Association • NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code): United States standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment • NFPA 79: Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery in NEC Confidential: Unauthorized Use Prohibited

Why need MTW • NFPA 79 limits the use of AWM in certain machinery • Some styles have thinner insulations • Some meet bare minimum flammability requirement • AWM wire and cable that also carry an MTW or other suitable listing may be used in certain machines • NFPA 79 points out MTW as a suitable UL listing for industry machinery Confidential: Unauthorized Use Prohibited
