  8. Which License do I Need • C Non-commercial license for drivers age 18 and older. (Also for drivers new to Georgia who are age 17 and who hold a valid Class C equivalent from another state.) • D Provisional license issued to drivers ages 16 and 17. • M License for motorcycle operators. • E, F Non-commercial license for drivers who operate commercial motor vehicles and who are exempt from commercial licensing requirements. • A/B Commercial Licensing • All instructional permits are issued with the class designation followed by the letter “P”.

Who needs a license • any person wanting to operate a motor vehicle must obtain a Georgia driver’s license or permit within 30 days of becoming a resident. • Anyone meeting 2 of the following requirements: • permanent home in Georgia • accepts employment or engages in any trade or occupation in Georgia or who enters his/her children in school. • Any person that has been in the state for 30 days or more. • Full Listing with exceptions available @ http://www.dds.ga.gov/

  10. Driving is a privilege Driving Is a Privilege that carries responsibilities… Including… • License / Permit • Mandatory insurance requirements • Vehicle registration • Adherence to traffic / Safety laws • Dangerous or Negligent that privilege can be taken away

  11. Ways to lose your privilege • Suspension • Revocation • Cancellation

  12. Suspension • all driving privileges are temporarily withdrawn • for a specific period of time • until requirements have been completed • Defensive Driving • Reinstatement Fees • Fines

  13. Mandatory Suspension • Homicide by vehicle. • Serious injury by vehicle. • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. • Any felony in the commission of which a motor vehicle is used. • Using a motor vehicle in fleeing or attempting to elude an officer. • Fraudulent or fictitious use of, or application for, a license/ID card.

  14. Mandatory Suspensions … • Hit and run or leaving the scene of an accident. • Racing. • Operating a motor vehicle with a revoked, canceled, or suspended registration • Felony forgery related to an identification document. • Driving without insurance. • Driving while license is suspended, revoked, or canceled. • Any violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act.

  15. Under 21 Suspensions • Reckless driving. • Aggressive driving. • Purchasing an alcoholic beverage. • Attempting to purchase an alcoholic beverage. • Underage possession of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle. • Misrepresenting age to buy any alcoholic beverage. • Misrepresenting identity or using false id to buy alcoholic beverage.

  16. Under 21 Suspensions • Speeding 24 mph or more over the speed limit. • Unlawful passing of a school bus. • Improper passing on a hill or a curve. • Any 4-point offense. • Four or more points in 12 months prior to age 18. • School attendance or conduct violations (under age 18).

  17. Other Suspensions ( non Conviction ) • Refusal to take a chemical test for intoxication. • Failure to appear in court or respond to a citation. • Non-payment of Child Support. • Non-payment of the Super Speeder fee. • Safety responsibility. • Medical revocation. • School attendance (under age 18). • Parent requested revocation (under age 18).

  18. Point System • Reckless Driving 4 • Unlawful Passing School Bus 6 • Improper Passing on Hill or Curve 4 • Speeding – 15-18 mph over the posted speed limit 2 • Speeding – 19-23 mph over the posted speed limit 3 • Speeding – 24-33 mph over the posted speed limit 4 • Speeding – 34 mph or more over the posted speed limit 6 • Disobedience of Any Traffic-Control Device or Traffic Officer 3

  19. Point System • All Other Moving Violations 3 • Child Restraint – 1st Offense 1 • Child Restraint – 2nd and Subsequent Offense 2 • Aggressive Driving 6 • HOV Lane Violation – 4th and Subsequent Offense 1 • usage of wireless telecommunications device requirements 1 • Operating a vehicle while text messaging 1

  20. Revocation • all driving privileges are terminated and withdrawn period of time prescribed by the formal action of the Department

Mandatory revocations Three convictions of any combination of these offenses within 5 years: • Driving under the Influence (DUI), • Homicide / Feticide by vehicle, • Serious injury by vehicle, • Hit and run or leaving the scene of an accident • Racing, • Using a motor vehicle in feeing or attempting to elude an officer, • Fraudulent or fictitious use of, or application for, a license/ID card, • Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended, canceled, or revoked registration, • Any felony in the commission of which a motor vehicle is used, or • Felony forgery related to an identification document.

  22. Revocations • Refusal to submit to a re-examination of driving skills or knowledge of driving rules • sufficient evidence that you are incompetent or unfit to drive • disease, • mental or physical disability • alcohol or drug addiction.

  23. Cancellation • applicant fails to give the required or correct information needed at the time application • if the individual becomes otherwise ineligible after application has been made. • A resident may reapply for a license once the requirements have been satisfied and the resident is otherwise eligible.
