Fashion Trends ● Mood rings, lava lamps, Rubik's cube, Sea Monkeys, smiley face stickers, string art, and pet rocks all were very popular in America during this decade •  Men had shoulder length hair and non-traditional clothing became very popular • Bellbottom pants, hip huggers, colorful patches, hot pants, platform shoes earth shoes, clogs, T-shirts, and gypsy dresses • Knits and denims were the in fabrics •  women were fashionable in everything from ankle-length grandmother dresses to hot pants and micro-miniskirts   • The movie Annie Hall even inspired a fashion trend with women sporting traditional men's clothing such as • derby hats, tweed jackets, and neckties worn with baggy pants or skirts

Foytmade racing history by winning the Indianapolis 500, 24 hours of Le Mans, and the Daytona 500 • 1973 – Secretariat won the Triple Crown of horse racing winning the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and then the Belmont • 1973 – Roberto Clemente was the first Latin American to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame • Sept. 20, 1973 – Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match • February 18, 1973 – Stunt driver Evel Knievel jumped across 50 cars stacked four deep in the Los Angeles Coliseum • Arthur Ashe first African American to win Wimbledon

Pope John Paul II • Religious Person • Background Information • 58 years old when he was elected • His real name was Karol Wojtyla • He was the first Polish pope after a long line of Italians (445 years) • Elected pope on October 16, 1978  • Spoke in Italiam instead of Latin for his speech • traveled all over the world • was wounded by an assasin in 1981 • Why is He Important? • He spoke against such things as abortion and was a very active and traveling pope • What Major Goals/Objectives Did He Want To Accomplish? • He preached for international peace and for reconciliation between religions • He saw the end of communism in Poland and Eastern Europe

Shirley Chisholm • Political Person • Born Shirley Anita St. Hill, November 30, 1924, in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY • Was the first African American woman elected to the US Congress • Was re-elected six times • Retired from political office in 1983 • Hired all-female staff during her 1st term in Congress • Spoke out for civil rights and women's rights, advocated for the poor and opposed the Vietnam War • Ran for Democratic Nomination for President in 1972

Muhammad Ali • Social Person • American boxer • Was only heavyweight to win world championship three times • Originally known as Cassius Clay • Took Muhammad Ali when he converted to the Nation of Islam (Black Muslims) • World champion: 1964-1971, 1974-1978, 1978-1979 • Was unusually skillful and fast on his feet as well as strong for a heavyweight • Big boaster: "I am the greatest!"

Jimmy Carter • Political person •  Democrat • Became president in 1977 • played leading role in making peace between Egypt and Israel • Strongly opposed Soviet intervention in Afghanistan • lost popularity when he failed to rescue US embassy officials taken as hostages by Iranians • Remained active on international scene, helping to find peaceful solutions to several crises

April 22, 1970-The First Earth Day • Social Event •  Background: • Co-founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson • It was modeled from anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, called teach-ins, common on college campuses • Nelson wanted to devote a day for a "Nationwide Teach-in" on the Earth after reading an article about another teach-in • wanted to do this so it would get the attention of politicians and force environmental issues into the national spotlight • Why Was It Important? • It led to the creation of: • The Environmental Protection Agency in 1970 • The Clean Air Act in 1970 • The Endangered Species Act in 1973 • How Did It Change America? • It opened America's eyes to the environmental problems and encouraged Americans to help save the Earth. • 20 million people, 2000 colleges and universities, 10,000 grammar and high schools, and 1000 communities came to the demonstrations • Congress adjourned so they could see the demos • It changed the political landscape respecting environmental issues  • It was a HUGE success...as you can see today!

May 4, 1970-The Kent State Shootings • Military/Political Event • Background:  • Many college students were opposed to the Vietnam War • Many held rallieson campuses • In Kent, Ohio, a riot was caused (no one knows who) • The mayor called a state of emergency and the Ohio National Guard was sent in to make sure no more riots occured on campus • On May 4, 1970 a protest rally was planned for at noon • After the rally had generally ended, 28 guardsmen started shooting for 13 seconds • 4 students were killed and 9 were injured  • Why Was It Important? • It showed that students were fighting for what they thought was right • The shootings sparked more rallies • It showed that at first, justice wasn't served because of the American people saying that the students deserved what they got  • How Did It Change America? • It showed America what an injustice it was • Is still researched today

May 17, 1972-The Beginning of the Watergate Scandal • Political Event • Background: •  Break-in to the Democratic National Committee HQ • HQ: Watergate office Complex-D.C.  • 5 men were arrested  • FBI found that the men were connected to 1972 Committee to Re-elect the President • Evidence mounted against the president's staff • included former staff members testifying against them in an investigation conducted by the Senate Watergate Committee • Was revealed that Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices • Recorded many conversations • the tapes revealed that he attempted to cover up the break-in • Supreme Court had Nixon hand over the tapes  • Led to: • Resignation of Nixon • faced near impeachment in House of Reps and possibly conviction in Senate  • Indictment and conviction of some Nixon administration officials • Why Was It Important? •  If the Watergate hearings never happened, if the five men weren't caught, Nixon would not have resigned and he would have got away with a lot of other things. • How Did It Change America? • Now, people don't trust everything they hear from the government.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN8OfPc_aQ8&feature=related

  26. January 22, 1973-The Roe v. Wade Decision • Social Event • Background: •  Jane Roe (aka Norma McCorvey) wanted to have an abortion but her Texas state laws made it impossible. Was brought to Supreme Court • Said that a woman's right to an abortion is determined by her current trimester of pregnancy • In 1st trimester, state cannot restrict a woman's right to an abortion • In 2nd trimester, state may only regulate abortion procedures related to the woman's health • In 3rd trimester, state can choose to restrict or proscribe abortion • Court rested these conclusions on the constitutional right to privacy • The Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment • Why Was It Important? • Landmark decision by the Supreme Court on abortion • Disallowed many states and federal restrictions on abortion • How Did It Change America?  • Prompted a national debate that continues today • Should abortion be legal? • To what extent should abortion be legal? • Who should decide the legality of abortion? • What methods should the Supreme Court use in constitutional adjucation? • What should the role of religious and moral views be in the political sphere? • Reshaped national politics  • Divided US into pro-choice and pro-life • Activated a lot of movements

April 30, 1975-The End of the Vietnam War • Military Event • Background: • War ended on April 29, 1975 • Then North Vietnam took over the capitol of South Vietnam • US intervened to support SV, and kept bringing more troops and arms • in 1960s deaths and injuries grew, and US were still losing • Many Americans did not want this war and the country was divided • Then US signed peace treaty with NV, and 1973 US troops withdrew • SV still lost • Shows that we will fight for Democracy when needed and when not needed • Americans show their opinion on when not needed
