“A Soldiers Plea” by Bradley Shane If only all the dead could cry outIn a single roarAnd say don't send a mother's sonTo die a death in war They'd say look at how we layWithout life or limbThe bullet that tore our breast so wideHas caused our eyes to dim The flash of a musketThe crack of a bullets speedA small piece of death is sentTo splinter bone and bleed The cannon sends a rain of deathOf steel and grit and bonePay no heed to the dying manOr take pity on his moan The orders are always the sameMove forward boys make hastA yard of ground a league todayDon't think of the horror and the waste The war boys, the wars for allGod's on the side that's rightBut the devil owns the battlefieldWhen you hear the cries at night A drummers rolls a steady beatA bugle plays a mournful tuneA sword is dipped in honorFor the mothers son who died too soon
