  1. American Values Chapter 3, Section 1

  2. Traditional American Values • In his 1970 study, American Society, sociologist Robin Williams identified 15 core American values. • Since then, the composition of the United States and its culture have changed greatly– are these 15 values still central?

  3. First 5 Values • Personal Achievement • Individualism • Work • Morality • Humanitarianism • Make sure you understand what each of these terms means, and possibly an example.

  4. Second 5 Values • Efficiency • Practicality • Progress • Material Comfort • Science and rationality • Same thing as before– know what they mean and maybe an example.

  5. Last 5 Values • Equality • Democracy • Freedom • Nationalism/patriotism • Racial and group superiority • Same as other two groups of values…

  6. Changing Values • Values, like other aspects of a society, are dynamic and change over time. • Other values that have been suggested through the years include: leisure, youthfulness, education, romance, environmentalism, etc. • These all fall under an individual’s desire for self-fulfillment= commitment to development of one’s personality, talents and potential.

  7. Is Self-Fulfillment a good thing? • We see the desire for self-fulfillment in things like self-help books, shows, diets, etc. • Is this a good thing? • Christopher Laschsaw the desire to be one’s best as a personality disorder. • He termed it narcissism= extreme self-centeredness. • When you get caught up in yourself, you forget the greater society.

  8. Create your own • Create your own values pyramid. (6-10 total) • Include the value, why its important and a small picture.
